Another solution is to clean your iPhone screen with iKlear apple polish, the laptop screen cleaner. It leaves an antistatic film behind that also helps with the watermark. Takes a couple tries to get it perfect, don’t polish it off too hard.

Hey Carlos. Have you considered trying the Baby Powder Trick on the Black Switcheasy NEO? I bet a little baby powder between the phone and the silicone part of the NEO would help it fit better. Even you pointed out that the white is not as sticky as the black. You can see how shiny the black is in the video making it stickier than the white. Maybe this could be the difference. If it works let me know! Thanks.

OMG thank you so much, those water marks got me sooooooo pissed off. But another way to do this without any foriegn shit, is to leave the case and the ipod all opened up and lay it next to a heater vent all night. Then the next morning wake up and clean it all and put it all back together and there shouldnt be any water marks!!

THIS REALLY WORKS!!! like carlos said, it may take you a few trial and error trys, but eventually it works. Just a tip, if you buy the smaller bottle like i did, waste a bit before you begin to shake. Gold Bond is really good about filling their bottles to the top. I found this out the hard way and got covered in baby powder with just a tiny squeeze.

Carlos, you’re my hero, and whoever thought of this first, YOU ROCK !!!
I’m using an Invisible Shield, and this method works only if you’re willing to sacrifice some picture quality – it’s a little more dusty than I’d like, but it’s still better quality-wise, than with an antiglare screen. I had to apply the powder to both the phone and the Defender, took me about half an hour to do it, but it worked. It was actually more difficult to get the phone with the shield into the Defender itself.
by zrogon
, on June 2 2009

That’s a very bad idea, you not only loose the warranty on the product, but also the protection, which is much more significant, than most of the screen protectors out there.

i just wanted to say that the much quicker way to solve this is to just get the power support anti-glare film. put it onto iphone first, then put on the defender case. it looks perfect, and no drop in screen sensitivity at all. (i didn’t try it one the screen protector, just the anti-glare one, and that’s why i recommend it)

I tried several things to get rid of that mark. One was the skin oils they suggest and then I tried a couple different screen shields. The one from Apple worked best. The Power Support ani-glare worked fantastic. No issues at all.

Otterbox-Defender.. Thank for the first review,it pretty much sold me on it,i’d like to get one i think, after i see that there it nearly no negative reviews. The only concern about the powder is that it could be abrasive and scratch the iphone screen or the otterbox screen.

to anybody thinking about buying a otterbox defender for the ipod touch 2nd gen. it is shipped with a plastic film on the inside of the inside of the screen protecter. DONT REMOVE IT! it will eliminate the wattermarking 100% an will not effect the ipod working. its that simple people!

just did it, awesome! just to clarify there is NO damage because the baby powder is applied to the CASE, not to the iphone, and the amount of baby powder is insignificant. again, this method works great – and is essentially FREE if you have baby powder in your house (compared to anti-glare).

When you puff the baby powder, if you hold the iPhone a couple feet above the bottle, you’ll get a finer mist (don’t let big particles drop downward onto it). I got the best results this way – and also by puffing the iPhone itself and not the Defender case.

I’ve tried every suggestion Otterbox threw at me.. From applying the screen protector they sent me, to rubbing my fingers on the membrane, to putting a drop of dish soap in 2 cups of water and rubbing the membrane with that. Nothing worked until I watched this video. It is a bit tricky to get just the right amount of powder on the membrane but this works the best. The people at Otterbox are complete idiots but they make one hell of a cover.

I bought a 5-pack of screen protectors from Best Buy for $10, made by DLO. I installed one directly on my iPhone, then installed the otterbox, and the watermark effect is completely gone. I would use one over any type of powder, which might scratch the screen, or any type of solution applied to the screen. Just go buy a cheap screen protector and apply it under the otterbox, and you are done.

you know what i did, i discovered it while cleaning my iphone with a paper towel, generic, not bounty or big brand or else… What i did was, i get completely wet the paper towel, then i clean the screen just to make sure its clear of whatever it gets, then i start like ‘touching’ not sweeping or rubbing just pressing it and taking it out. what what it doest is that you start leaving this paper towel particles almost invisible that will prevent the cover to get stick to the screen. thats all

Hey Carlos – Your tip on how to get rid of the watermark (air bubbles) on the screen of my Otterbox has made me a fan of yours – and saved the life of my Otterbox! The bubbles were driving me crazy – totally frustrating. After your advice, I sent a nice, invisible baby powder cloud it’s way and the watermark is gone. Totally. No sign of the powder, either. Thanks for the tip! I was getting ready to heave the Otterbox into the pond across the street.

I also can’t rate the Otterbox defender highly enough. Best case ever if like me you need a heavy duty case. I work in engineering & this protects it from all the dust and stuff. Hey, thank you very much, it works like a charm with my iPod Touch 3G. That was driving me batty because it is otherwise an excellent case for our investment. I did one extra step to get rid of any large particles that might cause problems, I gave the screen two or three short bursts of air from the can of compressed air I use to spray out my PC tower, etc. Works like a charm and no more freaking watermarks or minute powder particles either!! I watch your channel all time so I figured I’d post this up here. I have this case and you don’t need to do the powder trick or have a screen shield on your iPhone to get rid of the oil slick look. Clean the phone and and clean the inside of the case. Then all you need to do is run the screen 3 times long the palm of your hand. So simple and no more oil slick. Don’t clean the screen again before putting it in the case. No more oil slick.

I called the people at otterbox….they told me to wipe the screen with oil from my hands and hair and that would solve the problem. The first version of the box I couldn’t hit the spacebar on my Storm…got the free upgrade. Maybe someone at Otter should actually have a phone and try to use it before they mold and make 40,000 units and send them out into the world. I just about hated this company …. Thank you very much for this post…it worked.

I love my otterbox defender case
had it nearly a year now and its still going strong. The only problem is like you have said the ring/silent button is hard to switch on and off. But you can cut the hole to make it bigger to get to. Another issue is the rubber flaps can come off after using for a while. Still the best case for protecting your phone bar none.

That wasn’t a quick tip. That ten minute video could have easily been two minutes. I’m not going to waste ten minutes trying to get the exact amount of powder…I’ll just get an antiglare screen protector or just deal with the air bubble.

If the baby powder is too full then tap some out onto the table then move the cover thru the small cloud 4 or 5 inches above it. You won’t see any powder on the cover but it will cause the same effect without trying to squeeze the bottle to get it. Works great here.

I was almost ready to return my Otterbox Defender case due to the oil slick affect. At first I thought of just removing the original clear film and install a separate one before putting it back in the hard shell. That kinda defeats the purpose of the Otterbox. So Otterbox tech support recommended your video. It worked perfect the first try. Thanks so much!
by Pepperfroth
, on February 19 2010
@ 7:37 pm
I had an anti glare screen protector on my phone when I first got this otterbox in the mail and tried it out. I had the oil slick problem WITH the screen protector on, so I took it off and still had the problem. My guess is it might have to be a particular brand of screen protector to have the same effect as the baby powder, because I still had the issue with one on.

Thanks a bunch for showing this man.I love the Apple design philosophy of simplicity + function and didn’t want a case that robbed the Iphone of it’s beauty. I found it. The Switcheasy “Nude” case in clear. The only thing holding it back from perfection – “oil slick” or “watermarks” on the back of the case. But, low andbehold; “the baby powder fix”. Thanks a Bunch morphious this really works. At first I didn’t want to use baby powder but since I had some baby powder in the house and was short on options I gave it a shot. Took me a while because i kept on squeezing too hard wanting to see something happen. But for those who are attempting to do this you don’t even need to squeeze the bottle, you shouldn’t see anything come out, at all.

Great tip. also to avoid getting the white powder on the inside of the screen, you can simply put some powder on the screen then lightly rub it on with your fingers.

I absolutely love your narration style in some of this. Your style is both funny but also shows good delivery.
“you take the powder.. baby powder.. triple bond”
“You know you gotta cloud in here. now there’s a cloud in there of powder… You know there is.”
I think your delivery reminds me of a less abrasive Vince (slapchop and shamwow guy).

My wife’s 3GS had terrible bubbles. I found a half filled bottle of baby powder in our cabinet. One try and the bubbles were gone. I couldn’t even see the cloud coming out, but I guess it was there. The problem is fixed 1st time. It took longer to get the phone out of the case than to fix it.
My defender case is on order for my IPhone 4. I’ve got my Johnson’s baby powder ready to go when it arrives.
Thank You

This worked great for me, except I had a little bit harder time.
I had already gotten a very expensive screen protector for it (invishield by zagg) so it took a ton more baby powder to work. I had to coat my phone and the otterbox for it to work. You can see the powder when its not lit, but its invisible when the screens lit so its a compromise. For me, anythings better than those watermarks

You can use almost anything to clean the screen of the otterbox and iphone screen. then use a blow dryer on a low setting dry off both the otterbox screen and the iphone screen. Keep the blow dryer about 12″ away from each and it doesn’t get very hot at all. Do this for a minute or so. Then when you put the otterbox case together there will no NO bubbles at all. I used windex to clean my iphone and otterbox screen. Worked perfectly on both phones I tried it on.
