I bought the case-mate naked case for the iPhone, and found out after I ordered it from online that it has the watermark effect. I am glad I found this video, because I don’t want a screen protector. I hope this will work fine for me on the naked case!

  35. by chopper82pNo Gravatar, on November 26 2008 @ 2:30 pm

thats a nice trick for the watermark.

cool fix man, thanks for spreading the word.

  37. by CCDeepNo Gravatar, on December 7 2008 @ 1:00 pm

Another solution is to clean your iPhone screen with iKlear apple polish, the laptop screen cleaner. It leaves an antistatic film behind that also helps with the watermark. Takes a couple tries to get it perfect, don’t polish it off too hard.

  38. by magnum115No Gravatar, on December 10 2008 @ 8:08 pm

i have a case (dont know the brand) for my PSP and it had a crazy watermark (even though you dont touch a psp screen it pissed me off) and this worked perfect for it.

  41. by godzillaiphoneNo Gravatar, on December 30 2008 @ 3:41 pm

you can just rub your hand across the screen without a screen cover and the water marks go away

  46. by capwellkidNo Gravatar, on January 16 2009 @ 7:53 am

I wonder if this would work on the watermarking you get from the clear Arctic Switcheasy Rebel? It drives me crazy but I am afraid to use the powder on the back of my phone.

Hey Carlos. Have you considered trying the Baby Powder Trick on the Black Switcheasy NEO? I bet a little baby powder between the phone and the silicone part of the NEO would help it fit better. Even you pointed out that the white is not as sticky as the black. You can see how shiny the black is in the video making it stickier than the white. Maybe this could be the difference. If it works let me know! Thanks.

THIS REALLY WORKS!!! like carlos said, it may take you a few trial and error trys, but eventually it works. Just a tip, if you buy the smaller bottle like i did, waste a bit before you begin to shake. Gold Bond is really good about filling their bottles to the top. I found this out the hard way and got covered in baby powder with just a tiny squeeze.

  86. by zrogonNo Gravatar, on June 2 2009 @ 9:54 am

Carlos, you’re my hero, and whoever thought of this first, YOU ROCK !!! :) I’m using an Invisible Shield, and this method works only if you’re willing to sacrifice some picture quality – it’s a little more dusty than I’d like, but it’s still better quality-wise, than with an antiglare screen. I had to apply the powder to both the phone and the Defender, took me about half an hour to do it, but it worked. It was actually more difficult to get the phone with the shield into the Defender itself.

  87. by zrogonNo Gravatar, on June 2 2009 @ 9:55 am

That’s a very bad idea, you not only loose the warranty on the product, but also the protection, which is much more significant, than most of the screen protectors out there.

  88. by carwrecka13833No Gravatar, on June 2 2009 @ 6:21 pm

  96. by thephilmasterNo Gravatar, on June 24 2009 @ 8:38 pm

i just wanted to say that the much quicker way to solve this is to just get the power support anti-glare film. put it onto iphone first, then put on the defender case. it looks perfect, and no drop in screen sensitivity at all. (i didn’t try it one the screen protector, just the anti-glare one, and that’s why i recommend it)

  97. by helicopterkid1996No Gravatar, on June 26 2009 @ 8:25 pm

Sorry carlos i accidently rated it one. Im really sorry!

  98. by petro62No Gravatar, on June 27 2009 @ 11:19 am

I tried several things to get rid of that mark. One was the skin oils they suggest and then I tried a couple different screen shields. The one from Apple worked best. The Power Support ani-glare worked fantastic. No issues at all.

Otterbox-Defender.. Thank for the first review,it pretty much sold me on it,i’d like to get one i think, after i see that there it nearly no negative reviews. The only concern about the powder is that it could be abrasive and scratch the iphone screen or the otterbox screen.

  105. by CanarsieKhaosNo Gravatar, on July 6 2009 @ 1:39 pm

Hi. Do you think this method will work on the Capsule Rebel Arctic case? It seems to have a love for watermarking. lol.

to anybody thinking about buying a otterbox defender for the ipod touch 2nd gen. it is shipped with a plastic film on the inside of the inside of the screen protecter. DONT REMOVE IT! it will eliminate the wattermarking 100% an will not effect the ipod working. its that simple people!

  118. by FrinkrudsNo Gravatar, on July 25 2009 @ 5:58 pm

just did it, awesome! just to clarify there is NO damage because the baby powder is applied to the CASE, not to the iphone, and the amount of baby powder is insignificant. again, this method works great – and is essentially FREE if you have baby powder in your house (compared to anti-glare).

  119. by JonNo Gravatar, on July 27 2009 @ 9:57 pm

  123. by iwflzNo Gravatar, on August 5 2009 @ 3:17 pm

When you puff the baby powder, if you hold the iPhone a couple feet above the bottle, you’ll get a finer mist (don’t let big particles drop downward onto it). I got the best results this way – and also by puffing the iPhone itself and not the Defender case.

  124. by spiddy9693No Gravatar, on August 7 2009 @ 7:48 pm

is not an air bubble because air bubbles is trapped air but watermarks are caused when the protector makes contact with the ipod or w/e and causes it to look like trpped water srry i cant really explainit

Thanks man. This has probably been one of the most helpful hints on youtube. I had the defender case and i had a little water mark, i was very skeptical about taking the case off since i was scared that i would just end up having a bigger water mark; but this tip had really taken away the water marks. Yeah it does take some time to work it out, but it does work. Mine had worked when i sprayed it, left it for a minute, then wiped it and no water mark! Thanks Morphious you really know you stuff

I’ve tried every suggestion Otterbox threw at me.. From applying the screen protector they sent me, to rubbing my fingers on the membrane, to putting a drop of dish soap in 2 cups of water and rubbing the membrane with that. Nothing worked until I watched this video. It is a bit tricky to get just the right amount of powder on the membrane but this works the best. The people at Otterbox are complete idiots but they make one hell of a cover.

another otterbox user giving great thanks for this tip!! I just picked up my 3GS yesterday to replace my 2g iphone that got wet while riding my motorcycle. I decided to prevent further accidental rain situations I would get an otterbox and be done with it. I too had a terrible watermark but i was gonna do what I could to deal with it due to the case being that great in every other way. Then I stumble on this video and I have no more watermark problems!!! Thanks a ton!

This is not what you need to do. NO POWDER!!! All you need to do is go to the Apple store and buy the anti glare screen protector and that will totally take care of the watermark. The watermark will come back if you use powder…

  145. by ldubb31No Gravatar, on September 4 2009 @ 2:56 pm

Yeah the anti glare screen protector worked like a charm.

  146. by tom43491No Gravatar, on September 5 2009 @ 12:21 pm

I bought a 5-pack of screen protectors from Best Buy for $10, made by DLO. I installed one directly on my iPhone, then installed the otterbox, and the watermark effect is completely gone. I would use one over any type of powder, which might scratch the screen, or any type of solution applied to the screen. Just go buy a cheap screen protector and apply it under the otterbox, and you are done.

you know what i did, i discovered it while cleaning my iphone with a paper towel, generic, not bounty or big brand or else… What i did was, i get completely wet the paper towel, then i clean the screen just to make sure its clear of whatever it gets, then i start like ‘touching’ not sweeping or rubbing just pressing it and taking it out. what what it doest is that you start leaving this paper towel particles almost invisible that will prevent the cover to get stick to the screen. thats all

Hey Carlos – Your tip on how to get rid of the watermark (air bubbles) on the screen of my Otterbox has made me a fan of yours – and saved the life of my Otterbox! The bubbles were driving me crazy – totally frustrating. After your advice, I sent a nice, invisible baby powder cloud it’s way and the watermark is gone. Totally. No sign of the powder, either. Thanks for the tip! I was getting ready to heave the Otterbox into the pond across the street.

Do you think the screen protector would hold up if the iPhone landed face down when dropped and the screen hit a pebble on the road? Also, if the Otterbox screen gets scratched or cracked can we buy just that part of the case as a replacement or would we have to buy a whole new case?

Got the Otterbox yesterday & used it on the phone all day with the watermark which is really annoying. Came home tonight & used the powder & its perfect now! Great tip. I also can’t rate the Otterbox defender highly enough. Best case ever if like me you need a heavy duty case. I work in engineering & this protects it from all the dust and stuff. Metal dust from grinding used to wreck speakers in my Nokias all the time but the Otterbox has a membrane which does not let dust in. First class.

GREAT TIP ! ! !! Works lie a charm! No more water marks. Took a couple of times to get it right, but a quick sweep with a micro fiber to clean off the powder I put on the screen on the first couple of tries and now I have a screen that looks like there is NO screen protector on it at all ! ! !

  191. by tacoinusaNo Gravatar, on November 13 2009 @ 5:27 pm

thanks for the tip.. works like a charm. i had that water mark since last week. it had covered about 20% of the middle area. now after 10 tries. i am just left with a 1% at the bottom right corner. i am happy with that. i used a big baby powder bottle. which makes it a little more awkward to work with but that is all i had in the house. at the time. i sure i would of done it in less tries with a small bottle of baby powder.

I watch your channel all time so I figured I’d post this up here. I have this case and you don’t need to do the powder trick or have a screen shield on your iPhone to get rid of the oil slick look. Clean the phone and and clean the inside of the case. Then all you need to do is run the screen 3 times long the palm of your hand. So simple and no more oil slick. Don’t clean the screen again before putting it in the case. No more oil slick.

I appreciate the time u took to video this solution It appears to have worked, but it could have been explained it less than a min. You should buy an editing program for your video and cut out all the parts where u messed up.

Did it in less than 30 seconds, worked like a charm first time. No powder residue, no watermarks. Ok, vid could have been way less than 10 min, but the tip worked. Thanks!

I love my otterbox defender case :-) had it nearly a year now and its still going strong. The only problem is like you have said the ring/silent button is hard to switch on and off. But you can cut the hole to make it bigger to get to. Another issue is the rubber flaps can come off after using for a while. Still the best case for protecting your phone bar none.

  245. by dgmorris2009No Gravatar, on January 10 2010 @ 3:52 pm

I may have a claim for infringement here. I have called my girlfriend “Otter-Box” for years. Not because of any security issues, but because her squack smelled like a nappy fish-eating sea creature who wallowed in penguin shit all day.

I used corn starch and a clean make up brush . Only the amount that could be picked up by one finger of the side of the bag and some light brushing. I didn’t have baby powder but corn starch is the primary ingredient.

  252. by PockASqueenoNo Gravatar, on January 18 2010 @ 8:25 pm

That wasn’t a quick tip. That ten minute video could have easily been two minutes. I’m not going to waste ten minutes trying to get the exact amount of powder…I’ll just get an antiglare screen protector or just deal with the air bubble.

  253. by uscman55No Gravatar, on January 18 2010 @ 10:56 pm

I was wondering if a water mark and air bubble were the same thing because the lightest touch on my iPhone screen sends a huge bubble across it

If the baby powder is too full then tap some out onto the table then move the cover thru the small cloud 4 or 5 inches above it. You won’t see any powder on the cover but it will cause the same effect without trying to squeeze the bottle to get it. Works great here.

  256. by mr1990bluechevyNo Gravatar, on January 21 2010 @ 10:00 am

mine made really bad air bubbles so all i did was touch the screen to get some fingerprints on it like the oil from my fingers….and the was no more bubbles. looks like there is nothing there

CHARGER NOT FITTING??? just take a razor cutter and shave the sides of your charger down. I did it for 2 of mine and it worked

  308. by xmusicislifex05No Gravatar, on February 19 2010 @ 9:58 am

Better way without powdering your phone is the plastic bags comic books come in. Cut it down to size and stick it between your phone screen and the case screen. Bam done with no powder touching your phone

  309. by nicksapp100No Gravatar, on February 19 2010 @ 1:18 pm

I was almost ready to return my Otterbox Defender case due to the oil slick affect. At first I thought of just removing the original clear film and install a separate one before putting it back in the hard shell. That kinda defeats the purpose of the Otterbox. So Otterbox tech support recommended your video. It worked perfect the first try. Thanks so much!

  310. by PepperfrothNo Gravatar, on February 19 2010 @ 7:37 pm

I had an anti glare screen protector on my phone when I first got this otterbox in the mail and tried it out. I had the oil slick problem WITH the screen protector on, so I took it off and still had the problem. My guess is it might have to be a particular brand of screen protector to have the same effect as the baby powder, because I still had the issue with one on.

Thanks a bunch for showing this man.I love the Apple design philosophy of simplicity + function and didn’t want a case that robbed the Iphone of it’s beauty. I found it. The Switcheasy “Nude” case in clear. The only thing holding it back from perfection – “oil slick” or “watermarks” on the back of the case. But, low andbehold; “the baby powder fix”. The guy who figured this out = genius. You posting a vid of it = Youtube/Iphone God!! Thanks Morphious!
