Just when you thought it was safe to buy a nav app for the iPhone, Google goes and announces a free app for Android, and says it’s going to be available for the iPhone if Apple will let it into the App Store.
The app, called Google Maps Navigation, will ship with phones running the Android OS 2.0 and includes search by voice, search for points of interest by voice while in route, satellite and street view, and support for a hardware dock for ‘certain devices.’
This won’t be great news for TomTom, Navigon, or any of the rest. Google says the app is U.S. only for now, and will be seen first on the Verizon Droid which will appear in November.
Talk about disruption! With the FCC watching it will be most interesting to see if Apple allows the app onto the iPhone and, whether yes or no, the effect on Android sales.
I can’t wait for all the fur to fly. You can watch a video of the app in action in this YouTube clip. Admit it. You want this!

judging from your comments, you are not very mature. from the way you ‘insult” or “diss” i figure you for 8th grade, maybe even 9th grade. even the fact that you spelt “Bad-Ass” you made extra effort to emphasize it’s cool by giving it capital letters and even a little hyphen. I’m just saying, you lost your creditbility and my care for what you have to say. I follow the iPhone and the android, just because it gets a free google turn by turn app, will not even make it close to obsolete.

any by the way, Google said this is coming to the iPhone as well, as long as it is approved by Apple. Apple and Google are being evaluated by the FCC right now, and Apple can NOT afford to not disapprove the app. so just wait and see, how about we keep in touch and in a few months I’ll say “I told you so?”

Two points:1. Murphy’s law applies here: when you need it most you may not have a cell signal much less a 3G data signal. So having an offline map/poi database with GPS navigation logic is critical. If Google Maps can be downloaded for free or purchase for offline use that would be outstanding.2. You can’t assume that every smartphone will have a data plan. While it’s true that most carriers in the US force one on you, not all do, like t-mobile. Also, carriers in other countries may not.

alfrecast is just exited right now, its understandable. no, apple is not being evaluated by the fcc. neither is at&t really but the case you are referring to is over some network neutrality dispute between at&t, google and the fcc. and i keep pretty up on this stuff and google has said nothing about porting this to the iphone or any other os they know this is another slam dunk for Android.
by setheroon1
, on October 28 2009
@ 4:59 pm
even verizon phones? anyways im pretty sure you can set your rout ahead of time and it all the info/streetveiw pics ect. get stored in a cache for viewing offline in case you get disco’d. besides where i live its rare to find an edge area we are moving into a world covered completely by a network there will be speedbumps.
by crapiola
, on October 28 2009
@ 5:04 pm
@marcxie:No. GPS signal is received from the GPS satellites. What you’re thinking of is the A-GPS feature which works to get a location fix using cell phone tower or WiFi triangulation in case you can’t see the sky. A-GPS is nice but not necessary. GPS is all you need.A clear view of the sky could be hindered in urban areas by tall buildings, etc, but having a very sensitive GPS receiver (which the iPhone does not have) could overcome the so called ‘urban tunnel’ syndrome.
by crapiola
, on October 28 2009
@ 5:14 pm
@marcxie:Ideally, you want a solution that works in standalone/offline mode using a downloaded map and poi database that’s resident on the smartphone that works without internet/3G data connection. The internet data connection should be used to update your map/poi database when an update is available (free or purchase). To be sure, Google Maps and the new Navigation feature is not that solution. There are others that do offer it for purchase on the iPhone, ex: Navigon, TomTom, Sygic, Co-Pilot.

Macrumors and Appleinsider booth confirmed, that this will application will not be an appstore downloadable application, but a replacement for the built in “Maps” application. So Apple will NOT need to aprove the googlemaps app as other navigation apps, since the “Maps” application is a built-in one from the begining. It will rather make an in-house decision of the inclusion of this application. It will appear as an OS upgrade, hopefully in the next update.

Do we also get off-board navigation so that we save on mobile data plan charges? There should be some version of Off-Board Map Data on Mobile Phone, and the mobile could just check for newer version of data and live traffic. If no new version of map data is available for that area, we will save on Mobile Data Plan? Will Google do something like this?

Apples ego is too big.The iphone isn’t the top dog anymore, its far from the “best” phone on the market but it keeps its status as the most purchased phone a fashion item. Batt: Not all have car docs so it depends on the device. You can charge via the extusb port on the G1 whilst in the car so it is definitely possible.Phone: same as anything else in Android. It pauses whatever you’re doing and opens the phone app. Android multi-tasks so you don’t loose what you’re doing. Like going back to the GMaps after taking a phone call, it will just update the screen to where you are now.

Agreed. The G1 is great for demoing Android but it doesn’t have the hardware specs that it needs. The newest custom versions of 1.6 are faster than ever but I can’t wait for snapdragon-based devices (acer). 1Ghz procs with dedicated graphics chips… It’s gonna be great.

Insane! I really hope they will use GPS data from all Android devices to generate those traffic reports. If everybody used this, there would be less jams and pollution. Google could actually help reduce CO2 emissions using this.Fun if it also could say, like: Going by car will take you 43 minutes today, going by train will take 23 minutes including the walk.

I’m wondering if there will be a way to cache the maps, for use in areas without cell coverage. Assuming the device it’s on has standalone GPS, that doesn’t require cell sites to intiate the first fix ( Palm Pre ). And for the dude a couple comments down, yes Apple will be getting this. Google is said to be working closely with Apple on this feature. One interesting thing is Apples recent purchase of a mapping company. Go Droid!

it requires an internet connection… so unless you’re on an unlimited data plan, realistically I doubt many people would use this. Imagine the price it would rack up just being connected. Next theres the issue of speed, the web can only stream so fast to the phone, driving around at high speeds would probably cause the phone to lose track of where you are

Sux that its not for the iPhone – the only one on there is the TomTom at £79 quid and its not good.Give the presenter a break. He did pretty well. He’s probably some super brain at Google who designed the app, riding around in some space car in a tube at Googleplex with shit loads of Google shares in his back pocket – so wouldn’t care about nostril comments from general lamers.

Great, and as soon as you go out of the country where you have your mobile data plan contract, you’re screwed. None of the fancy cloud data described here and, much much worse, no maps, because you can’t connect to google to download the map data (unless you pay extortionate roaming fees). As far as I’m concerned, when I’m out of the country is when I really need maps, so the map must be stored locally on the device, not on Google’s servers.

Being a photographer who works in Washington DC my job requires me to drive around DC all day, Before I bought navigon I used Google maps all the time to get around it worked fine but it lacked the re-routing feature. So I ended up buying Navigon for iPhone. I have no doubt the Google navigation will work great in DC but I will still probably use my navigon most of the time because of the downloaded maps. I think that a free navigation system is great but there will always be a use for navi systems that have downloaded maps as long as there are dead zones with your wireless carriers.

But there are other GPS apps that compare significantly to this one. ALSO. one drawback to ANY mobile GPS….. If you are out of the network…… prepare to get lost. iPhone users need to listen better. He says it’s a Google Ap developed by “Google” for it’s “Google Android OS”! Has nothing to do w/ any other operating system or phone. Available only on Android powered phones. So iPhone simply isn’t getting it, just like iPhone brain dead users!Just eat your hearts out. iPhone is going to be a loser w/o these new Android ap/services. Wouldn’t work anyway w/ cheap Wifi chipped iPhone on crap AT&T service. That drops calls every other block!

Kroneage – if you were to do your homework or more research, you will find that iPhone now has an application for TomTom to be used on iPhones which from first experience is working well on my phone. It is an excellent application and works well her in Europe. Before you start to criticise Iphone users, just remember that iPhoneasare available all over the world and with different network providers, not just for some brain dead Amercians who can’t seem to think further than 1 hour ahead!

The problem is this, apple picked the wrong side when it had to choose between google and AT&T. The problem with Teleco’s and google is that google is a company that promotes innovation, instead of a company like AT&T that seeks to fatten it’s pockets, and in return, treats it’s customers to a crappy network. Don’t get me wrong, i have an iPhone, and i love it. But I also love innovation, because in the end the customer benefits from it. Like i said, Apple picked the wrong side

I’m not impressed w/ this navigation thing it’s duplication in the market, If it had Augmented Reality perhaps I’d be more inclined. Google get original and stop copying what others do and make a NEW “widget”. Something we didn’t know we needed and can’t live without. I know you guys have it in you! The closest thing you can get to this on iPhone is an app like Tomtom which you have to pay a lot for. Oh, and it’s retarded, not retarded, just for future reference. im afraid for this feature!!.. cellular carriers with their own navigation apps are going to let this happen?? i can understand that Verizon will because right now this feature is exclusive to droid.. but what about att and sprint, i hope they let this pass, and if they do there will be consequences for customers, for example navigation may become a part of the data package, so they will be forcing us to purchase it… this feature is free but some how they will make us pay..

Not sure what you mean “GPS automatically take over”. How can GPS replace the Internet?Assuming they don’t go backwards from the current version, I can grantee at least this much: If you don’t have an Internet connection, then any pre-computed routes will still display. You may not be able to see map data though, if those tiles didn’t cache. At least you’ll still have your turn-here street instructions.Without an Internet connection you won’t be able to plot a new course, or alter current.

Ya, Google is starting to go from industry leader and innovator to following the crowd. They need to get back on top with something else we didn’t know we needed. When the analog TV frequencies were being sold, Google tried unsuccessfully to buy them. We should have given em to them, just to see what kickass thing they would have done with it.
by himitsumonban
, on November 8 2009
@ 12:04 pm
Yes but those systems have a local copy of the roads and address locations. The routing program is run locally. On Android, it all has to go up to Google, Google does the heavy lifting, and then the result is sent back to the phone. The only work the device itself does is to display the map with the server-generated route on it.

It’s all about Web services folks just like mobile Pandora but not for music(!) They host the maps,POIs,code base, etc. in huge server farms.Based on some of these You-Tube posts, you would think it was a bad thing–Well:expensive unlimited data plans-touche-but,this is awesome because POI, streets, imagery, core software updates, can be rolled out without the consumer ever noticing. For you geeks out there, I’m sure they are using a REST API that is obfuscated like crazy. It’s a slick Web app!

Google shouldn’t support Apple anymore since Apple don’t want to support anyone but themselves.I’m happy that Google decided to make Google Maps Navigation available to Android 1.6 which means Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will have this lovely programme.

What is it you don’t get? You download the maps from the Internet, that way you’ll allways have fresh maps (as fresh as they’ll get as of now anyways). The GPS positioning is still free and uses the same satellites as a TomTom or Garmin etc. would use.Make sense? Or do you need Google to draw you a map?

by timehAndGod

@ 4:18 pm
“i like to be independant”More like I want to save money. You are still being reliant on external organizations either way.Considering storage on mobile devices is limited, I would rather have the map data loaded on demand rather than an one-off download. Still if it cached data up to a certain point that would be sensible.

by timehAndGod

Why didn’t you say “I want to save money” out-front then. Don’t make assumptions. Go get a TomTom or something if you are afraid of spending money on data fees…Your independency was lost a long time ago in case you were wondering. The fact that you are using the internet and a YouTube account to post comments proves it. Lines have to be crossed eventually for progress to be made. Obviously you aren’t too fond of mobile data quite yet…

Yeah, sure, right up until you hit a spot with no service and your GPS dies. I much prefer the GPS based iPhone app from TomTom over that. Why would you ever want an internet based GPS? Around here there are so many dead areas outside the town I’m in it would be virtually impossible to use an internet based GPS.
by bryguy95
, on December 29 2009
@ 3:58 pm
@nellerboy2000 That’s because the AT&T network sucks so bad. Try using a better network and you won’t have that problem.
by nellerboy2000
, on December 29 2009
@ 4:02 pm
You mean Sprint that doesn’t cover anywhere within 300 miles of here? You mean t-Mobile that doesn’t cover anywhere within 300 miles of here? You mean Verizon that dies as soon as you leave town and stays dead for most trips in between large cities in a 300 mile radius?A lof ot people do live outside major cities. As for coverage in town here? Verizon and AT&T are the only ones here. Verizon has lots of dark spots here. AT&T doesn’t. It’s a no-brainer which one to pick.
by bryguy95

I love the maps feature on my Droid. Fuck tomtom and garmin, if they weren’t already installed in so many cars and the iPretty they’d already be obsolete by now. This does EVERYTHING and syncs together so nicely. The voice input is masterful, almost flawless, and the satellite maps are even more vibrant on the real phone than in the video. Not only more intuitive, innovative, and altogether SUPERIOR in every respect but FREE. No wonder Garmin’s stock fell as soon as this was first announced.
by bryguy95
, on December 29 2009
@ 4:11 pm
@nellerboy2000 Then your city is certainly an exception. Just ask New York, who AT&T briefly decided to quit offering the iPhone to based on all the complaints about lack of coverage.
by nellerboy2000
, on December 29 2009
@ 4:16 pm
I know, it’s probably garbage there. That’s entirely due to the slack of AT&T in regards of speedy updates and modernization of their network. I don’t even have 3G at my location but, it has never dropped a call and never failed coverage on EDGE.As for the internet based GPS vs a GPS chip embedded in the phones, I would always prefer the GPS chip. And the people of NYC probably appreciate that as well.I use the iPhone for GPS in unison with the TomTom car kit. Works flawlessly around here.

The problem with connect GPS system is the danger of not having a signal when you need it the most. No matter how good your wireless provider is, there are always dead zones. Usually these dead zones are in remote seldom travel area where you really need your GPS.

You get your GPS position from the GPS chip in the phone yes, but as Michael said several times throught this video, all the maps and direction finding and traffic info and so on is all downloaded from the internet. If you have no internet then you can’t use Google Maps. You will have to buy different navigation software that has the maps already downloaded.
