New Swype Technology For Typing Text Launched For Smartphones – Will It Replace QWERTY?

A lot of mobile phones today, including the iPhone, have made typing easier by providing QWERTY keyboards. 

But can typing on mobile handsets get much more easier than this? Swyping is an upcoming technology that strives to achieve just that. 

So how is it different from typing on a QWERTY keyboard? Well, the letters of the alphabet are aligned in pretty much the same way as in a QWERTY keyboard. But instead of pressing the letters one by one while typing a message, swyping lets you to simply touch and drag your finger across the screen to the various letters to input the text. 

This new technology has been developed by Cliff Kushler who is also well known for developing the T9 predictive typing technology for mobile phones. The new technology is being made available for the first time on Samsung Omnia II and the company has announced that swyping shall be made available on Android handsets pretty soon. 

The technology looks interesting. But is it actually quicker than the present QWERTY keyboard? We have our doubts. A video developed by the company and published by TechCrunch compares swyping on Omnia against typing on an iPhone keyboard and concludes that the swypist is much quicker than the iPhone typist. 

The video does not seem to be providing a fair comparison and pits an expert swypist against a newbie iPhone typist.

Nevertheless, it is an interesting technology that could be the future. Kushler’s T9 technology is today available on close to 2.4 billion mobile phones and it will be exciting to see how far this new technology can go. What is your opinion on swyping? Please tell us in the comments.

    Well, there’s an application for iPhone called shapewriter pro that simulates Swype, but even though it’s pretty cool idea and I got use to it a little bit, I’m still typing faster on the normal iPhone’s keyboard…

    Pretty brilliant system. Reducing language to semi-abstract gesture compounds. Basically you are typing in pictographs similar to Chinese or kanji rather than words.

    They’re not even using any of the shortcuts on the iPhone – double space and you get a full-stop – but they don’t use it. So it’s not a really valid comparision – it looks like they’re using the short-cuts when they are using the samsung

    K so basically I call bs cause who ever was typin on that iPhone was typin really really slow! So I did the same paragraph sentence thingy myself and timed myself with a stop watch and I typed mine in 40.4 seconds verses there time of 1min 8 secs they were just tryin to make the swype look better

    I have an iPhone and for longer messages the qwerty is ok, but it is a hassle to input some short text message quickly, especially if its not in Latin alphabet. My gf types faster with one hand (while biking, advantage of a non touchpad phone, which she prefers over the touch phones) with t9 as words appear with much fewer ‘clicks’. That’s the point being made with the swipes also. For people who type a lot the swype will be faster, but there will be a steeper learning curve to use it well.

    it’s funny how most phones are comparing there’s to the iPhone lol hahaha.. You can’t compare nothing from the iphone.. It’s like.. comparing PC vs. Mac. Mac is hands down much better than PC.     You’re just doing what ever other insecure mac fan boy does. No offense, but you are. First off PC’s are better than macs. OR at least they are roughly the same. Also you don’t consider that what matters is how much movement it takes to type. If the swype is more efficient then the same person on the iphone will type more quickly on the swype. I’m not sure that it is, but you have to consider that. Exaggerating the truth won’t save the iphone. And there are tons of phones coming out.

    just because you can type on it, doesnt change the fact that the keyboard is flat. LOL. I had a htc tilit and i thought that keyboard was flat, the droid keyboard flatout sucks. and yes i have used it before so i am talking from experience. also, this way of typing isnt new. this swype thing is the exact same thing as the program for winmo called SHAPEWRITER. they basically bought it from him and renamed it.     The guy typing on that iPhone was typing unnaturally slow. It took him 53 seconds in the video to type the paragraph. I’m an average iPhone user, and I can type that same paragraph with no errors (or correcting any errors that occur) in under 25 seconds (read: 2x as fast).

In this video the phone is used like a keyboard, but imaging you are going somewhere and typing like ppl usually do, what gestures you will get then on your keyboard? chaotic? Your steppes will move finger, maybe I got something wrong but if you have to hold your finger on the screen whole word to type it then it suck…

    That’s not true 11olimar1092, the iPhone has a “smart” predictive text feature that auto-corrects words based on where your finger hit on the keyboard. For example typing the words “samd” and “saod” produce 2 different words, even though they are both one letter off from a real word. Same letter too. The first guesses “sand” because the m is next to the n. The second guesses “said” because the o is next to the i. It’s a very nice and why the iPhone is so good at auto-correction.

    I stand corrected. I know the Droid (and several other “smart” phones) have borrowed features from the iPhone, but I didn’t know some used the smart auto-correct too. It’s at least good to know they’re paying attention to detail.As far as this “swyping” way of typing. I think it’s a neat idea, and does seem pretty fast. I just don’t see anyone over the age of 25 figuring that out on their own or seeing it as intuitive.

    i type faster on the iphone than that…Swype looks interesting… Can anyone vouch for it?

    Well for all you iphone users saying u have the best touchscreen response and best touch keyboard well you are all sooooo wrong the iphone reign has ended looooong ago i have swype on my htc hd2 (capacitive touchscreen) and it beats the hell out of the iphone crappy keyboard and i won’t even comment on the response of it so beat tht!!! Iphone sucks big time!!!

    @Kbrlite it’s incredible. it can get very long and comlicated words no problem. its not the best for short words or messages, but writing long paragraphs becomes amazingly easy. i live in seattle and my dad knows the guy who invented it. hes now working on getting it on alot more phones on verizon and at&t.

    I can type 3 times that fast on even the droid onscreen keyboard. Probably faster on the iphone. Swype is cool and i’ve been using it the last few days. I’m already faster than this guy with it but basically everyone i know can beat me with any other keyboard. Not convinced its the new cool thing.

    I install this app for my motorola droid and let me tell you guys “its freaking fast and accurate” i was never a fan of touch screen typing but this app changed my mind.. thanks to swype, it is still a beta version, i wonder when they coming up with official ?

    Obviously it depends on how the user is used to the prog. An iphone user can definitely type fast than that. Furthermore with the auto correction, typing on the iphone is definitely faster. However kudos to swype as i think they have def created an alternative ‘text input prog’.

    I just dropped the beta of Swype onto my phone and I’m very pleased with it. I don’t think it’s faster than typing with two hands, but I can approach 2-hand speed with one hand. It’s also spot on with word recognition. Don’t knock it until you try it.
