A lot of mobile phones today, including the iPhone, have made typing easier by providing QWERTY keyboards.
But can typing on mobile handsets get much more easier than this? Swyping is an upcoming technology that strives to achieve just that.
So how is it different from typing on a QWERTY keyboard? Well, the letters of the alphabet are aligned in pretty much the same way as in a QWERTY keyboard. But instead of pressing the letters one by one while typing a message, swyping lets you to simply touch and drag your finger across the screen to the various letters to input the text.
This new technology has been developed by Cliff Kushler who is also well known for developing the T9 predictive typing technology for mobile phones. The new technology is being made available for the first time on Samsung Omnia II and the company has announced that swyping shall be made available on Android handsets pretty soon.
The technology looks interesting. But is it actually quicker than the present QWERTY keyboard? We have our doubts. A video developed by the company and published by TechCrunch compares swyping on Omnia against typing on an iPhone keyboard and concludes that the swypist is much quicker than the iPhone typist.
The video does not seem to be providing a fair comparison and pits an expert swypist against a newbie iPhone typist.
Nevertheless, it is an interesting technology that could be the future. Kushler’s T9 technology is today available on close to 2.4 billion mobile phones and it will be exciting to see how far this new technology can go. What is your opinion on swyping? Please tell us in the comments.

I have an iPhone and for longer messages the qwerty is ok, but it is a hassle to input some short text message quickly, especially if its not in Latin alphabet. My gf types faster with one hand (while biking, advantage of a non touchpad phone, which she prefers over the touch phones) with t9 as words appear with much fewer ‘clicks’. That’s the point being made with the swipes also. For people who type a lot the swype will be faster, but there will be a steeper learning curve to use it well.

You bring something that may be an alternative, and ifans give it 1 star so the vid ends up with only 2 stars. apple fans are the most annoying. The mind set is they’re brainwashed into thinking one company is the best and every thing is a copy, and they should worship Jobs. All bent out of shape with 1/2 calling it an iphone rip off. It’s a NEW PHONE! and there are plenty more coming out. If apple were so great they would have included these features FIRST along w/ those found on others
by abcshrill

You’re just doing what ever other insecure mac fan boy does. No offense, but you are. First off PC’s are better than macs. OR at least they are roughly the same. Also you don’t consider that what matters is how much movement it takes to type. If the swype is more efficient then the same person on the iphone will type more quickly on the swype. I’m not sure that it is, but you have to consider that. Exaggerating the truth won’t save the iphone. And there are tons of phones coming out.

The iPhone is coming under a lot of attack more so than ever right now and it is starting to crumble. Just because it is popular does not mean it is better than other phones. iPhone is a style and fad that will eventually pass. Mullets were popular in the 80’s does that mean they’re better than other haircuts?
Popular ≠ good.

Relax. I posted a comment on Windows 7 too! I even posted a video response showing what a regular person types like on an iPhone. The low rating is because the test is not a fair comparison, not because the iPhone is inherently better at everything. Search “Swype is faster?” to see my reply

The guy typing on that iPhone was typing unnaturally slow. It took him 53 seconds in the video to type the paragraph. I’m an average iPhone user, and I can type that same paragraph with no errors (or correcting any errors that occur) in under 25 seconds (read: 2x as fast).

Idiot. This in no way is a threat to the iPhone. It’s not revolutionary nor is it new. Like I said, you can already get this in the app store. So what? It’s sold to OEM’s? It’s now suddenly the biggest breakthrough in technological history? If it’s already compatible with the iPhone, you haven’t done anything. Game changer my ass. Wanna know a game changer? iPhone. That’s not true 11olimar1092, the iPhone has a “smart” predictive text feature that auto-corrects words based on where your finger hit on the keyboard. For example typing the words “samd” and “saod” produce 2 different words, even though they are both one letter off from a real word. Same letter too. The first guesses “sand” because the m is next to the n. The second guesses “said” because the o is next to the i. It’s a very nice and why the iPhone is so good at auto-correction.

Surf the web and you’ll find the number one usability complaint about the iPhone is text input. Of course there are people who text a lot on the iPhone who can go really fast. But an average user looks about like the person in this video. All you blazing texters / naysayers on the iPhone: imagine taking those well-developed skills and applying them to Swype. The fact that you are still going letter to letter but don’t have to lift and set down your finger every time means FASTER. Try it.

If you are referring to my comment about it being just like any other virtual keyboard, it pretty much is.I tried your examples in my Droid it does the same exact thing and brought up the same suggestions…hence my point that iPhone keyboard is the same as any other virtual keyboard with capacitive display(responsiveness).

I stand corrected. I know the Droid (and several other “smart” phones) have borrowed features from the iPhone, but I didn’t know some used the smart auto-correct too. It’s at least good to know they’re paying attention to detail. As far as this “swyping” way of typing. I think it’s a neat idea, and does seem pretty fast. I just don’t see anyone over the age of 25 figuring that out on their own or seeing it as intuitive.

@realisticHomeboy It’s not Swype that’s causing it to lag. It’s the phone itself. Just like on the phones with the regular texting, some phones like the iPhone 3GS are very fast, whereas phones like that HTC Kaiser (AT&T Tilt) when you start typing fast it lags, I’ve had both, I know. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPhone. I would like to have this Swype feature on it though. In the end it still depends on the phone speed and the texter to see who texts faster.

@realisticHomeboy I’m just pointing out that it’s probably lagging because of the phone, since you were saying “How can you type with such latency? Swype doesn’t show anything until a second after you are done typing the word.” So just pointing out that it may not be swype causing the lag, as opposed to what that part of your comment was implying. And btw I am not trying to argue with you, so don’t get mad or anything (don’t know if you are or not).

maybe swype wasn’t meant for a iphone user that can type fast. Maybe its more for some one like me that can’t type fast. I also understand that alot of people love their iphones but don’t take this video so personal. The only reason the iphone was used in comparison is because its hailed as having one of the best on-screen qwerty keyboards in market. iphone users should take this more as a compliment.

its an unfair comparison…..I understand they’re trying to show how easy it is to use their keyboard, after you get good at this you can go really fast, etc, but they make the iPhone look like its slow. Also, iPhone, as well as BlackBerry’s, can push space twice to get a period instead of opening up a separate menu for their symbols. The people who made this are just trying to make the iPhone look harder to use to the people that have no idea how the technology of phones is going.

i had a trial of swype on my droid. it was awesome. pissed that it expired. its really beautiful tho. i used it all the time in portrait while driving. Since everyone knows where keys are on a keyboard and this is a qwerty layout, i could just rub my thumb where i thought the keys were without looking at my phone at all. the beauty of swype is as long as you are close to the right letters for most of the letters it still guesses what you meant.

I tried this on my iPhone and was able to type much faster than the Swype user in both portrait and landscape mode. Even using one finger on the iPhone I was only seconds behind the Swype user. I even made mistakes and corrected them like the Swype user. This video shows nothing.Although, I do agree with some people. If you are well experienced with Swype you will probably end up typing faster… with one hand. iPhone with two hands still wins because people are used to conventional keyboards.

You should try it out. It’s naive to think that just putting a keyboard onto a touchscreen makes it the best input method. The guys at Swype have actually thought about the strengths and limitations of a touchscreen and designed for it. It’s why it’s better.

@RandyD1234 The record for texting is a new category, so anyone could have taken it, even if they took like 15 minutes to type it out. They’re not going to going to hold the record long. My girlfriend could text what was said in that commercial faster than what that guy could on a querty. The point is: who cares how fast you can text on it? People will pick what they’re comfortable with. What really matters is what a phone can do, and so far the iPhone 4 can do tons more than the Omnia II.

No one will care anyway, it’s a matter of a maybe 15 seconds difference according to this “demonstration”. If you showing off your ability to “swype” people will just think you’re an asshole. No one you’re talking to will care how fast you text as long as you text them back in a reasonable amount of time.

@UnF0cuS My point is that a couple seconds of faster texting, regardless of the method, doesn’t equal a better phone. This phone’s whole ad campaign is based on how fast you can text on it. It doesn’t talk about anything else. If you guys wanna believe the hype, then buy the damn phone, and if you can’t master Swype well enough to beat or even keep up with querty keyboards or T9 by the time a better phone comes out, then you proved my point.

@d14ca No one knows shit about what the future of technology will be. Unless you work for one of the providers then I don’t think that anything you say about what the “future” of phone technology is valid or intelligent. Just because one new gadget comes out doesn’t mean that it’s suddenly going to take off and become the new thing. If the public doesn’t like this phone, they will stop making it, and if they don’t like the swype, then they’ll drop it.

@d14ca Swype being a better form of texting is (and this was my point from the start) a matter of opinion and preference. Who do you think the manufacturers are trying to appease? The consumers. If people don’t buy this phone or don’t like the swype texting, they will drop it. It doesn’t matter if it’s faster or not. The opinion of the public determines what products stay and what gets dropped. So, either the phone or swype, if it’s too hard for people, it will get dropped. PERIOD.

@UnF0cuS There are also things that you don’t consider cuz of the dumb commercial that is making you all think with your wallets rather than your heads. You can’t text on a swype phone without looking at it. That’s a nuisance. I can text whatever i want without looking at my phone once. Also, you can’t text on a swype you’re on a bumpy road in a car. And the thing people are overlooking most is that you’ll get tired from texting over and over with the swype method. It uses different muscles.

@UnF0cuS As a phone user and consumer, i just listed several things that fit under a category that in the end, matters most to consumers. PRACTICALITY. If the technique doesn’t work out better in every way compared to querty or T9, then the consumer will not desire it, and it will be dropped. Speed doesn’t matter. Whether or not it’s practical and useful does. So go right ahead, say it’s better. You have no proof that it is. It’s user preference.

also, using your point of user preference to answer your own question, the person texting enough to want to get it done faster will want the input method to be faster…think before you post.

@cherokeerage Yea i know that. Don’t pretend that you made a valid point. I didn’t say people wouldn’t buy it. People will buy it because they want to text faster. But that’s all it’s good for. Other phones still beat it. So if people want a phone that can do more, or a phone that’s easier to use, they won’t buy it. You have to read everything that I wrote and take it all into consideration that I haven’t said anything false or without thinking. Those aren’t “big boy words” you asshole.

@cherokeerage The need to text 15 seconds faster is a compulsion among people who are tech junkies, have nothing better to do, made of money, or base themselves on their possessions. It’s like buying a brand new microwave because you only have to press one button to set it and your meal is ready 10 seconds faster. The cost vs benefit factor is completely inversed. So congrats to anyone who buys the phone. Well done. You’re just fueling the machine.

Swype is cool technology for sure. But it’s the user more than it is the software to a point. We most likely all know girls who can type with one finger while not looking on a Razor,or 3GS whatever…so what is faster really mean? “studies show blah blah blah…” I think the market is far better with more choices, thanks to the new droid phones for years to come. You closeminded infants with your foul language,so offended by brand loyalty need to chill. As the choices remain strong;people will change

despite the fact that they MAY be typing and swyping at the same speed, but swype will still win because spaces are automatically added.on the iPhone(typing) you have to press the space bar yourself.

People are making too big a deal about this.. it is a competition between two very quick text inputs! I’m tired of reading “The iPhone guy sucks i can type 100 times faster.” What about the swype guy? He might not be very fast either? You dont see anyone defending him though.. typical iphone fanboys.

Rather than wage war over which is better, wouldn’t it be nice to have the option of having Swype on the iPhone? That way you could try it for yourself — which is what I would like to be able to do — and see which one is easier and faster for you. I do a lot of typing on my iPhone’s virtual keyboard, but my big thumbs and peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage to my hands/fingers) contribute to my making a lot of mistakes that not even the iPhone’s wonderful auto-correct feature can cope with.

the typer on the iPhone is wayyy to slow!(and no i aint no fan of anyone but just being honest) but anyways back to the topic i don’t get the swype feature why is it so popular? i have an iPhone and a N97(but N97 recently got it though) neither one of them have swype texting but really by looking at all these demonstration video…i prefer the iPhone standard typing and the standard and quick typing on physical keyboard of N97..way more practical..but it’s just my opinion=)
