Tap Tap Revenge 3 Free iPhone App Downloaded 300,000 Times In 24 Hours Since Launch
In October of this year, Apple enabled in-app purchasing for free iPhone apps on the App Store.
Back then, we had commented that this could be a game changer and “can potentially change the way the App Store operates today and is something that will see the launch of freemium applications on the Apple App Store.“
Change it did, as Tapulous, the makers of the hugely popular Tap Tap Revenge 3 iPhone app relaunched the game as a free app last week. The idea was to make the basic app free and monetize off the music tracks purchased through the application by the users.
The strategy seems to have clicked as the company announced that the iPhone app was downloaded more than 300,000 times inside 24 hours since it went free. The rush of downloads hit the Tapulous servers so hard that the company had to disable the ONLINE PLAY mode in order to manage the traffic.
While the app did well as a $0.99 paid app, it is likely that a larger chunk of the money came from the purchase of music. With the initial buzz surrounding the iPhone app having lulled down a bit, making the iPhone app free could open the floodgates to a larger chunk of the audience who could soon be making much more money for the developers with their song purchases than Tapulous could have made otherwise with the paid iPhone app.
If you are looking to download the app, you may do so by clicking here (iTunes link). We are curious to know how many of our readers downloaded the free app. What do you think of this move by Tapulous? Please tell us in the comments.
