Adobe Demos Flash On HP’s Upcoming ‘Slate Device’; Takes A Dig At Apple

HP Slate with Flash demo videoShould Adobe Flash be made available on touch screen devices like the iPad? This is one question to which we will never receive a definitive answer. While there is obviously a case for incorporating a ubiquitous software platform like Flash on the iPad, issues such as the high resources consumption and other inherent flaws of the platform has meant that there are plenty of arguments against Flash as well.

This debate could also probably be the “flashpoint” in the fight for market share in the nascent tablet segment. A case in point is a recent demo video for HP Slate, which is scheduled to launch in the market later this year. In this video, Alex Tam from the Adobe Flash product marketing team demonstrates the capabilities of HP Slate in rendering Flash based content.

Apparently taking a shot at Steve Jobs’ statements that Flash would bring down the iPad’s battery life from 10 hours to a measly 1.5 hours, Tam asserts that hardware acceleration of H.264 encoded video on HP Slate ensures that users can watch “hours and hours” of Flash based videos on the tablet without draining out the battery. Tam also emphasizes on the ubiquity of Flash on the web and HP Slate’s ability to let users play Flash based games, watch videos and use AIR based desktop applications and thus enjoy the “freedom to view and interact with content and applications” that they choose.

The HP Slate demo video however does not explicitly address the problems that have been voiced against Flash like frequent crashes and mouse-over problems. Here is the full video:

The debate surrounding Flash on the tablet makes us wonder if the availability of Flash alone could give Tablet manufacturers like HP an edge over Apple’s iPad. What are your thoughts on this?

Apple HATES flash for ONE reason only! Flash will cut into their appstore profits by introducing Hundreds of FREE flash online based games!

I’m not anti-apple, I have an Iphone, and after a year of ownership it’s limitations really piss me off. I was keen on the ipad, until i saw it’s just a big iphone and therefore a total waste of money. Finally someone has made some viable competition. Go HP. You’ve got more of my money (and no, I won’t be buying an iphone 4 either – there’s NO improvement)

Ipads are useless vanity toys that can only use 25% of the real web fully. The HP slate on the other hand uses Flash so you get the full real web experience and you can actually get real work done on it because it has the solid Windows 7 OS. Buying the Slate! Sorry Steve Jobs you will never imprison me in your increasingly sick controlling apple empire.

ipad is way better than hp slate, it seems to work too slow with touch features,

  • seesaw

This is now released as the HP Slate 500, running Windows 7.

@pentanoninux If both devices will eventually be able to load html5 material then isn’t it better to go for the device that also plays flash for the time being? I’m not hating, just saying. i don’t like the fact that i can’t play a video someone posted on facebook from my iPhone because it’s in flash. I can’t imagine going through that frustration with the iPad and that is exactly why im looking at alternatives…..which is what brought me to this video.

  • coolnitin2110

U better give it a capacitive touch screen….n multi-touch to make it a HIT!We hate resistive screens!

@heetki Showing pictures of the American president in press is now part of the liberal agenda? You’re an idiot.

  • readingleejh

  • heetki

Funny how they kept plugin obama pics, mau sa tung & NY times all going NOWHERE. GO TO HELL HP, I’m NOT supporting NO LIBERAL AGENDA.. A laptop will do just fine for me along with my 3 pc’s..

  • pentanoninux

it’s funny how this video is hating on Apple…like, 75% of the web is flash…lol yeah, if you do a lot of web-adds surfing. flash player here, flash player there…so funny. html5 is the future and flash will soon go to merely 5% and won’t have such a good name anymore. I’m not hating, just saying. I like flash, so please improve it in order to stay on top which doesn’t rely on flashy advertisement crounched all over the page in almost all websites nowadays. this video was funny…hahahhaaa

  • gregomhb

Nice! Windows 7… finally a tablet device that wont be useless for IT people and geeks alike. I really hope this happens. The only thing i’d like to see is some sturdy but portable snap-on keyboard. Something similar to the slide-out smart phone keyboards but a little bigger and a more tactile experience. If it could snap onto either side of the device for use in landscape and portrait modes. I’d be set!

  • themactep

Very slow UI, delayed response to user gestures. Get rid of UI unnecessary bells and whistles.

  • IPaduser75767

Doesn’t anyone know that HP announced that this device will not be introduced into the consumer market?
