Skype quietly delays charges for iPhone app calling

According to the fine print on the Skype iPhone app, free Skype to Skype calls will last all the way until the end of 2010. Yesterday, the date was given as the end of August, but it looks like we’ve all gotten an extension on Skype-to-Skype calling over 3G.

People were rather agitated about Skype deciding to charge for what Read more…read more

App Review: Weber’s On the Grill

It’s Memorial Day, and hopefully that means you’re celebrating the onset of summer by putting some meat on a hot grill until it tastes amazing.

If you need a little help, though, Weber’s official iPhone app (or the iPad version) can be there — it’s got references, recipes, tips, grilling timers, and even a shopping list feature (although if you’re planning to grill today, hopefully you’ve been marinating since last night!).

The app is excellent, with big, colorful pictures, a host of options for Read more…read more

Skype 2.0 Finally Allows VoIP Calls Over 3G But Skype To Charge Monthly Fee From 2011

Skype iPhone app 2.0Skype finally released a new version of Skype (Skype 2.0) that will allow users to make and receive VoIP calls over 3G.

Skype 2.0 also brings near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) to iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch.

AT&T had lifted its restrictions on apps consuming extensive 3G bandwidth in January and ever since a flurry of VoIP iPhone apps including Fring, TruPhone and iCall have updated their iPhone app to work over 3G.

David Ponsford of the Skype iPhone team had announced in February that Skype’s VoIP over 3G will be coming to the iPhone “real soon“.

But since it wasn’t released for quite sometime, it was speculated that an exclusive Verizon-Skype deal could heavily dent the chances of Skype releasing an updated version of their VoIP iPhone application that works over 3G.

Here are some of the enhancements in Skype 2.0: Read more…read more

iPhone HD to Feature Highest Resolution Screen Yet Seen on any Phone

iphone3GSSome folks over at a Czech Republic site have closely examined the screen of one of the leaked prototype models of the next-iPhone under microscope and they have found it to be much denser than the current-gen iPhone 3GS model.

This close examination of the screen has also confirmed the IPS panel screen (like iPad) for the next iPhone, with a high-resolution of 960×640 pixels.

The difference in screens between iPhone 3GS and the next iPhone can be clearly seen in the images attached below:

AT&T To Offer MobileProtect Insurance Plan To iPhone Users From June 6

MobileProtect Insurance Plan for iPhoneWe all love our iPhone for its design and form factor. However, these aspects are also a major reason why the iPhone is so vulnerable to damage. Until now, users who wish to sign up for an iPhone insurance had to go for AppleCare.

That could soon change as reports are coming in that AT&T may introduce its own iPhone insurance policy shortly.

According to an article on Boy Genius Report, the new MobileProtect Insurance plan is being introduced specifically for the iPhone and will be offered in partnership with Asurion. You may be aware that Asurion is also AT&T’s partner in the standard Wireless Phone Insurance plan that is offered to several other mobile phones on AT&T’s network.

Skype app finally delivers on 3G voice calling

There’s good news and a little bit (just a little bit) of bad news. Good news first: the iPhone Skype app has been updated to allow for calls using AT&T’s 3G data network.

AT&T’s restrictions on cell data usage have evolved over time. Recently, download data caps have been eased, from 10 MB to 20 MB. And since October 2009, VoIP apps have been allowed to use AT&T’s data network to place calls.

The elephant in the airwaves, however, has been Skype. Several months after AT&T allowed VoIP apps to use cell data, Skype was still without an update. The company, via a blog posting on its site, stated that it wanted to take the time to ensure that audio fidelity was at the best quality.

I made several calls over AT&T’s 3G network this afternoon using the updated app and was surprised at how Read more…read more

Microscopic signs that next-gen iPhone screen resolution will be 960 x 640

Czech Republic site superiphone.cz claims that it got hold of parts from the next-gen iPhone, but they’ve gone way beyond the analysis of sites like Gizmodo or Vietnamese sites taoviet and tinhte. Specifically, they’ve taken the screen from a next-gen iPhone, put it under a microscope (how cool is that), and counted the screen’s RGB elements to figure out the screen’s resolution.

By doing this, the Czech site has confirmed what we’ve “known” for a couple of months: the next iPhone will have a screen resolution of 960 x 640. This is quadruple the number Read more…read more

PwnageTool 4.0 for iPhone 3GS OS 4.0 Jailbreak Puts Your Device at Risk. Stay Away

PwnageTool 3.1.5 JailbreakThere is a new modified version of PwnageTool floating around in the wild which promises to jailbreak iPhone 3GS on iPhone OS 4 Beta without upgrading the baseband.

The creators of the original PwnageTool has confirmed that this version has been modified and redistributed without their permission, and most importantly, it doesn’t patches some important files which are required for the ultrasn0w unlock to work properly.

@iH8sn0w hah the bigger problem is people risking their baseband with this rogue pirated PT from @4n0nym0u5DEV (which doesn’t even work!)

@danielsowden nope. And it really is broken in some very important (obvious!) ways (and very risky for unlockers to use too

iPhone Exploit Allows Access To Data Even With A Passcode

Serious security loophole discovered on iPhone 3GSBernd Marienfeldt, a London based IT security expert has recently published a report that reveals a serious security loophole in the iPhone.

According to him, the vulnerability can enable hackers to access data of an iPhone even if it is secured with the latest iPhone OS update and locked with a passcode. This is possible by merely connecting an iPhone to a computer running the latest Ubuntu Lucid Lynx OS.

Elaborating on the kinds of data that can be accessible via this simple hack, Marienfeldt writes:   Read more…read more

Bluetooth headset comes with its own iPhone app

The Sound ID is a Bluetooth headset with its own iPhone app. EarPrint is an app created just to control the sound of the headset — you can tweak the audio in and out, change volume, and even find a lost headset directly from the iPhone itself.

Not exactly revolutionary (personally, I’ve never really found a reason to use a Bluetooth headset — when the actual iPhone didn’t work for me, the wired headset works fine), but it’s a nice bit of added functionality, especially if Read more…read more
