Found Footage: Browsing speed compared on the iPhone 4 and 3GS

Thanks to Obama Pacman, here’s a neat (audio muted) video comparison of web browsing speed over 3G on an iPhone 4 (shown on the left) and an iPhone 3GS (shown on the right).

The test was done using only mobile 3G with Wi-Fi turned off, and it shows a variety of sites using Safari in a head to head comparison. In almost all the tests, the iPhone 4 was much faster in Web browsing.

When you look under the hood at the iPhone 4′s 3G performance, the improved browsing speed is not much of a surprise; CNET benchmarked the 4 against the 3G (not the 3GS) and found dramatic improvement across the board. Even against the more recent 3GS, the iPhone 4 delivered stronger download performance in Andy Ihnatko and John Gruber’s tests.

The processor is obviously kicked up a notch as well. MacRumors, running benchmark tests, found the iPhone 4 processor to be 31% faster than the 3GS using Geekbench 2.1. The iPhone 4 came in with a 2.514 score across routine tests like memory allocation and view drawing, easily besting the 3GS at 2.298. Both were tested under iOS 4.

Benchmark tests are not really analogous to real life usage, of course, but they do give a basic indication for comparison purposes. So although it probably takes more muscle to paint the screen using the iPhone 4′s high-resolution Retina Display, the faster A4 chip combined with the improved network throughput (when you’ve got all your bars, that is) seems more than up to the task.

This is so silly. With the A4 chip inside the 4, what did you think? With the A5 chip in the 4s do you think that’ll make it slower than last year 4? That’s why it’s called an upgrade. Guess what the ios5 will be even faster that the 4s… hard to believe, i know!!!

  • ObamaPacman

@MegaXxMatthewxx iOS 4.3 provides even faster performance on all Apple devices =)

  • MegaXxMatthewxx

i have an iphone 4 and i did the speed test and shit really fast

  • FroggetandLeo

well duh the 4 is gonna be a bit quicker! its newer! but the 3Gs is still a really fast browsing phone and it kicks ass to almost any other phone except it’s big brother, the iPhone 4.

  • TheSlimeMachine

    TALK

  • DryIce365

@vaiodesony yea, ALMOST as fast :p

  • DryIce365

    @ObamaPacman i get mine on monday :D

  • ObamaPacman

    @DryIce365 Exactly. I love my iPhone 4.

  • vaiodesony

    Fuck iPhone 4 ! I got a 3Gs for 50$ with a 2 year contract ! And it’s almost as fast as an iPhone 4.

  • DryIce365

@innmate1414 very true, BUT lets do the math here. so lets say the iphone 4 is 2 seconds faster than the 3gs, that means if you browse 40 web pages a day you would be saving 80 seconds a day, times that by 30 (days in a month) and you get 2400 seconds which is 40 minutes, then times that by 12 (months in a year) and you would get 480 minutes. That is a lot of time isnt it? lol

  • cloudcally

    @chris1234667 same here, but i got the 3GS :D

  • musjamasha

I just have an ipod nano 4g and I don’t phucken care lol

  • 1000Hummer

watch my video if u want free apple iphone or any apple product.i myself got 2 macbooks and one iphone from there!!!

  • LOWnSNUG88

Are u guys retarded obviously the iphone 4 is going to be better its an upgraded version of the 3gs

  • innmate1414

But srsly guys, were talking few seconds when loading pages…

  • inphrased

funny that the ‘s’ in 3gs stands for speed

  • ObamaPacman

@chris1234667 It’s done about the same time. Hard to get it perfectly when 2 persons were pressing it, as I don’t have a third hand. ;)

  • chris1234667

considering you pressed 3gs first, i love my iphone 4

  • djmilo2

@musicfuse Yeah it’s pretty slow. But i have the iphone 4 now gotta say it’s EXTREMELY FAST compared to my 3g.

  • musicfuse

@djmilo2 3gs is not bad but the 3g is slow

  • mmffff

Actually it’s the HSUPA, I ran the same tests on my 3GS on WiFi, timing it with the video, and my 3GS on WiFi was faster than the 4… it’s not the rendering speed that makes the 4 faster…

  • winkipinky

cool, I ran the test (at the same time as the video for Gizmodo classic) on my 3Gs with IOS4.01 and it was pretty much identical to the video, much much slower than iPhone4. lol

  • ObamaPacman

@theHFchannel Thanks. It’s our signature product. Just google: obama pacman sticker

  • theHFchannel

I don’t think a matter of seconds between loading pages is much of a difference. You guys are paying an extra $100-$300 for your phone to load 5 seconds faster. Fail.

  • ObamaPacman

@ionutbreana Nope. Read the details link for more info.

  • EtheM68

@lopie09 untrue. The Iphone 4 is just released man….

  • kakasaka

@bmf89 I never noticed a speed difference from 3.1.3 and iOS4.xonly thing i noticed is battery goes slightly down more, as boggs down when too much apps are open due to multitasking lol

  • oxycodonez

obsessed with apple products much?do you masturbate to gay porn on your iPad aswell?*splat*

  • bmf89

Don’t believe in this test, because the iPhone 3GS is running 3.1.3 and iPhone 4 runs on 4.x!Redo it when both running on 4.x!
