iPhone 4 Drop Test [video] With Bumper Case

iPhone 4 retina display analysisIf you were thinking of buying a bumper for your shiny new iPhone 4 then you might want to think again.

Folks at iFixyouri, an online repair shop for iPhones have performed a drop test on the iPhone 4 with Apple’s bumper case to see if it can prevent glass and LCD damage.

iFixyouri report:

We’ve have known for a little while now that iPhone 4 bumpers do not offer all of the protection needed because customers have called in an told us. Although it does not take a video by iFixyouri to inform you that dropping your new iPhone 4 on concrete is a bad idea, hopefully this video squashed any doubts as to the bumpers effectiveness.

You can checkout the videos of iFixyouri’s iPhone 4 drop test with and without a bumper from a height where you would be typically holding the phone in front of you onto concrete.

So it took only 3 drops to damage iPhone 4 with the bumper case. In case of iPhone 4 without a case, it turned off in two drops and 4 drops to crack the screen.

iFixyouri points out that the bumper case protects iPhone 4 only when it hits the concrete on a corner but if the iPhone 4 falls on the glass then it can’t prevent iPhone 4 from getting damaged.

    Thanks for this test! I know that I didn’t want to try it out with mine. While I’ll still be paranoid about dropping mine, Somehow I’m a little less so, knowing that it’s possible for it to survive several drops on concrete.

    Also, I now know where to go to get one fixed if it does break. Thanks guys!

In my opinion, this is great information for many – sacrificing one iPhone could save hundreds since people will be more careful.

    @jerrybrace no. the bumper case was made not to add a touch of color. it was made to fix the problem that when you hold the phone a certain way the signal drops out. so the soul purpose of this case was to fix their mistake. of course they have color, they want it to be at least semi-stylish

    no, because apple is supposedly using gorilla glass, a type of glass that is much stronger than the regular kind. Apple and the people who actually manufacture it claim that it should not break when dropped, which is obviously not the case.

    i got a case by “griffin” who ive never heard of at walmart after best buy was all sold out. its the only iphone 4 case ive seen in store, (bestbuy, att all sold out) and its really surprisingly well. the feel of it is better than the phone w/o the case. its just a rubber bumper around the band of the phone and a clear plastic back that seems pretty sturdy. phone is far easier to hold with it on and i havent dropped it yet but i trust it would hold up decently well.

    The reason I bought the bumper is not for the safety issue. Is bcuz I heard some o the ppl said it will make the reception better. What the result came out foe my iPhone 4. It’s really help!     Just one comment if I may…The planet does not produce enough materials to ensure that every single person in the world can have an iPhone. So naturally, supply and demand takes over. Pricing puts this Smartphone on a plateau that most wiling consumers are unable to reach. In other words, you could of given that to someone happy to have one.     Apple is a joke. They release a product that has extremely serious problems relating to its core function (hopeless design that leads to poor signal strength when you hold the phone the same way most models in Apple commercials do)

    Most iPhone 4 features are standard on Android phones that cost far less; can’t believe Apple went to town on the 5mgpxl cam, my Legend has one. The screen is an energy hog, about 30% more power than AMOLED.

    And then there’s the fact that AT&T is totally shite.

    I heard AT&T signal strength + coverage is not good, but if you want an iPhone in the US you have no choice, and there is no unlimited data plan.

    I don’t get unlimited data on my HTC Legend in OZ, but my $29/month plan includes unlimited Youtube, Gmail, Facebook, Flickr (and some others I forget).

    I absolutely love my HTC Legend, an awesome phone. I dropped it for the first time the other day, not a single scuff mark, let alone damage. Its very sturdy with the aluminium case and rubber grips.

    The other thing I’ve noticed that seems to be widespread is a noticeable deficit in an iPhone’s general ability for data transmission and receipt.

    On speed tests for my HTC Legend I regularly get over 5 megabits download, and the switch between HSDA/HSDPA and wireless networks is totally seamless, except that unless its at home, I often get better performance out of Three mobile’s 3G+ Broadband zone here in the CBD where I live and work (Sydney, that is).

    @07liberian Again, it’s not marketed as a tough phone. It’s a piece of metal covered in glass and so it’s supposed to be taken care of, just like anything else made of glass. I’m quite sure fine wine glasses don’t handle more than a drop or two — again, their purpose is not to be something strong, just to serve wine. In that sense, the iPhone’s purpose it to call people and install apps, not to be an indestructible brick.

    I dropt my Nokia N97 many times. It never broke. Also with the iPhone 3gs i had no problems, for secure i have a cover now. iPhone 4 should never break like this. Why puts Apple so much effort for design, when you have to use a lousy case to ruin it ??!!

    the other 3 drops where just lucky. (except the one where it stopped working :P )

    I’ve dropped my phone plenty of times (by accident of course) and it survived so far…

    As far as i’ve seen the bumper offers little protection but is instead a cover for the antenna so the signal doesn’t drop out when you touch it.

    Enough hating though. The iphone 4 has decent hardware but it was rushed into production.

    @Putdownathefork Lucky for you, the back is easy to fix. As far as I know, all one must do is unscrew the two screws, slide off the glass, and replace it with a replacement panel! IDK if there are any replacement parts availiable yet, but there will be don’t worry websites like this one and others are sure to have replacement parts. However, it will void your warranty to fix it .

    Even if there is no deterrence, just keeping them away from others for a while will certainly cut down on the problems.I tend to place a lot of blame on socioeconomic circumstances (and culture) too, but until we have a better science of psychology, some sort of punishment (or the threat of it) is still neccessary.

    I like tests, mainly scientific tests, but, dropping something to see if it breaks -.- that’s not a test. Drop a tv, it’ll break, drop a house, it’ll break, drop a human, they WILL BREAK! Jet’s engines cut out and it drops to the ground, it will break. Find the fanciest most ’shockproof’ phone in the world an drop it off a helicopter ~10000 feet, no worries, it’ll break. Just like scratch tests, you can scratch a phone, you can scratch a brick wall with the same tools, thumbs up if you agree…
