The new iPhone 3GS models with updated ROM do not allow users to perform the traditional full jailbreak. As a result, there may be instances when the user may be required to perform a tethered jailbreak everytime their iPhone crashes or reboots. This can be an annoying experience especially if you are away from your computer or cannot tether immediately.

iDongle is a device that can come pretty handy under such circumstances. This is a standalone piece of hardware that comes with a mini-USB connector on one end and a male 30 pin connector on the other. The 60x30mm piece uses a 9V battery to offer the necessary power to not only boot your jailbroken iPhone, but also assist in jailbreaking and hacktivating the same if it is not already done. iDongle currently supports iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G/3G models.

A new hardware solution for the tethered jailbreak has been announced over at www.myboyfriendisageek.com.

It is called the “iDongle” and it is a small device that plugs into the 30 pin dock connector of your iPhone or iPod Touch. It solves the need to get home to your computer to re-jailbreak, if your device crashes or reboot on the go.

Push DoctorIf you have activated your iPhone through an unauthorized carrier (aka hacktivation) on iPhone 3.x, then your Push Notifications functionality in most cases will be broken. Even if you have tried getting it to work through “PushFix” via iPhoneil available in Cydia, it wont work as that fix uses a single shared certificate for all users who have installed it. This causes battery drainage and huge use of cellular data access.

Then came PushFix 2.0, which was the first “real” working solution for fixing Push Notifications on hacktivated iPhones. The only problem with PushFix 2.0 was that it used to charge a small fee, which according to its developer was justified because he used to provide solution plus support.

Fake iPhone 3.1.3It wont be long before some newer apps from the iTunes App Store will require you to have the latest iPhone 3.1.3 firmware in order to install a particular app. Earlier this month, Apple released the new iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod touch which upgraded the baseband to 05.12.01 for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, hence making it impossible to unlock them on the latest firmware with the newer baseband.

If for some reason you have decided to hold off from upgrading to this minor update until the new iPhone OS 3.2 or iPhone 4.0 is available, you can fake your firmware to iPhone 3.1.3 which will make iTunes believe you have the latest firmware installed, hence allowing you to download and install all the apps from the App Store.

Let me clear this upfront. The following instructions will only help downgrade iPhone 3G which is currently on iPhone OS 3.1.3 with 05.12.01 baseband and older bootloader 05.08.

This wont work with iPhone 3GS.
