iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak Nearly Ready For Release, “It’s A Matter Of Days” Now, Says Pod2g
It’s always nice to wake up to some good news relating to the jailbreak scene, and that is exactly what has happened this morning.
Continuing the tradition of keeping his fans and users informed, French researcher and jailbreak producer Pod2g has taken to his Twitter timeline to let the jailbreak loving world know that the up and coming jailbreak 5.1.1 untethered should be ready for a public outing in the next few days.
As you would expect from a jailbreak that provides freedom to the latest version of iOS – and covering pretty much all the devices capable of running that OS – the path hasn’t actually been a clear one, with a number of potential show-stopping issues cropping up along the way.
As we already know, if producing a functional and publicly distributable jailbreak was an easy and seamless process then a lot more people would be pumping them out, but the reality remains intact that it takes a very specific skill set and dedication of a lot of time and effort to overcome the hurdles.

How To Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 On iPhone, iPad, iPod touch (A4 Devices) With Updated Redsn0w 0.9.11
Popular jailbreak tool Redsn0w – compiled by the iPhone Dev Team – has just been updated with full support for iOS 5.1.1.
You may have caught our tutorial, which detailed how one could jailbreak their device tethered using Redsn0w, although since it was a pre-iOS 5.1.1 release, users needed to “point” the tool to the older firmware.
Thanks to the update, though, no download of older firmware is required, and Redsn0w version 0.9.11b4 now fully supports iOS 5.1.1.
The response from the iPhone Dev Team has been a swift one, but we’d expect nothing less from a group of individuals as dedicated and talented as they are. The updates for Redsn0w have been arriving thick and fast of late, and even though no new jailbreaks or iOS versions have arrived for quite some time, the utility has been subject to much housekeeping and performance enhancements.
Downgrade iOS 5.1.1 To 5.0.1 On iPhone 4S, iPad 2, 5.1 On iPad 3 Using Redsn0w [How-To Tutorial]
Update: this guide also applies to Redsn0w 0.9.11b2 and 0.9.11b4
The iPhone Dev Team has released the updated version of their Redsn0w tool which was teased a while back on Twitter by MuscleNerd. The update as you’d expect is a very significant one, and brings with it the support for downgrading the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new 3rd-gen iPad to an earlier version of iOS 5 from iOS 5.1.1.
All the A4-based devices can be downgraded swiftly at this point in time, and the whole process is a piece of cake. The only major requirement being; you must have your SHSH blobs+APTicket saved in a safe place, either locally on your PC or Mac, or on Cydia.
The iPhone 4S, the iPad 2 and the new 3rd-gen iPad have been out of the downgrading scene for quite a while, courtesy their “secure” hardware. But, the latest release of Redsn0w changes all that, and allows the average Joe to downgrade their devices smoothly, without even requiring iTunes.
At this point however, it’s worth noting that the iPhone 4S can be downgraded all the way to iOS 5.0 from 5.1.1, same goes for the iPad 2, which means that you can essentially use Absinthe to untether jailbreak both iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on 5.0.1, but the new 3rd-gen iPad can’t be downgraded beyond iOS 5.1, since it is the version of iOS it originally shipped with. This, combined with A5X processor in iPad 3 means that you unfortunately cant jailbreak it as yet. And like I mentioned before, if you have SHSH blobs saved for the version of iOS you want to downgrade to for your device, only then the downgrade process is possible.
Before we begin, let’s go through the things you’ll need for the whole process:
Upcoming Redsn0w Update Will Support Downgrading Of iPhone 4S, iPad 2, iPad (3rd Gen), Restore Without iTunes
With Apple having released iOS 5.1.1 to the end-user in the last couple of days, the various dev teams have been hard at work in updating their respective jailbreak tools to recognize the latest iteration of the Cupertino’s mobile OS.
None have been more dogmatic in their approach than the iPhone Dev Team, and as per MuscleNerd via Twitter, the latest version of Redsn0w will include downgrade capabilities for the very newest additions to the iDevice roster.
Although many will have happily updated, there are many reasons why you may wish to revert back, and since Apple doesn’t allow this to happen, we rely on the likes of the iPhone Dev Team to provide us with the solution.
Having already enabled A4 devices to be downgraded, the Redsn0w tool is now being brought up to speed to allow those wielding an iPad 2/3 or iPhone 4S to downgrade their software back to an earlier version – providing, of course, that SHSH blobs and APTicket have been stored away in a safe place.
