Fans and owners of Synology’s NAS systems rejoice, because the company has today made available its first Apple TV app, with DS Video now available to be downloaded, free of charge, from the tvOS App Store.
As you will no doubt have already figured out, DS Video is Synology’s app for streaming video content from one of its Network Attached Storage devices, with users able to stream that content to all kinds of devices including iPhones and iPads. Now, with the release of this app for Apple TV, owners of Apple’s latest set-top box can get their video content onto their big screen TV with ease, too.
Use DS video to stream your video collection on your DiskStation from your Apple TV device. Browsing is made easy as your videos are sorted in different libraries, and each movie has its information retrieved online automatically. And if you have plugged in a DTV dongle to your DiskStation, you will also be able to record TV programs, as well as view the TV program to manage the recording schedule even when on the move.
The app, which requires users to have the latest 1.5 version of Synology’s Video Station service on their NAS installed in order for DS Video app to work, allow users to browse and then play video files (such as movies and tv shows) on the latest Apple TV while also allowing recorded TV shows to be streamed if a DTV dongle has been plugged into the Synology device.
Updating to the latest version of Video Station
Synology NAS devices are capable of transcoding content on the fly as well, meaning this new DS Video app may be a perfect way to watch content that would normally not be compatible with the Apple TV. In fact, beefier Synology NAS devices such as DS716+ support hardware transcoding, which is something competition the likes of the Plex Media Server does not support yet on Synology devices.
As screenshots show, the app certainly looks the part and manages to avoid many of the problems that have left some media managers on the Apple TV looking bland. Users don’t want a simple list of media files on their 50-inch TVs, but rather colorful menus and such. This one has it all.
The Synology DS Video app is available to download for free from the tvOS App Store now.
This adds another big name to the tvOS repository, with the likes of VLC, Plex, Infuse 4, MrMC (a Kodi fork) and Kodi itself already having made their mark.
If you don’t have a Synology yet but want to invest in one for downloading and then streaming movies and tv shows to your Apple TV and other devices, we highly recommend getting DS716+. Not only is it easily powerful for streaming 1080p content, but is also future proof by supporting 4K video streaming as well. You can buy Synology DS716+ DiskStation from Amazon.
