Enable FaceTime Over 3G Natively On iOS 5 Or 5.0.1 The Easy Way
When FaceTime was introduced back in 2010, it was rightfully considered to be, at least back then, an “empty” feature. There were two reasons for this, it only worked over WiFi and only between two iPhone 4’s.
Since then, FaceTime has been brought to other Apple products and it now works on the iPad 2, iPod touch 4G as well as OS X and, because of this, it has actually become a pretty useful service for folks who stick to Apple for their computing needs.
Its first limitation – that of being WiFi-only – was removed thanks to a jailbreak tweak called FaceBreak which enabled FaceTime over 3G. This tweak has now been updated to support jailbroken iOS devices on iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1.
Before FaceBreak came along, users had to go through some rather complicated steps to enable FaceTime over 3G but now all it takes is a swipe of the finger (after installing the tweak, that is).
Enable FaceTime over 3G ! With 1 click and no setup, you can get FaceTime running over 3G and use it anywhere you want. No more looking up for nearby WiFi connection to use FaceTime. – Just install and Respring. FaceTime will now also work when on 3G.
You also will need to be on a jailbroken iOS if you wish to enable FaceTime over 3G using FaceBreak. You can follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on iOS 4.3.5 using Redsn0w (or PwnageTool), or on iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0w, PwnageTool, Sn0wbreeze & JailbreakMe (that last one being the easiest). For jailbreaking iOS 5 tethered using Redsn0w, you can follow our complete step by step guide posted here, or here if you want to use Sn0wbreeze on Windows.
Since jailbreak on iOS 5 is currently limited to tethered boot only, you can install ‘SemiTether’ patch (instructions here) from Cydia to make your jailbreak semi-tethered on iOS 5. For those of you on iOS 5.0.1 can follow our instructions posted here on how to jailbreak using Redsn0w or here using Sn0wbreeze.
Performance over 3G will obviously be poorer than on a fast, stable WiFi connection but some performance is better than no performance at all.
Once installed, simply respring your iOS device! If this doesn’t work, disable and the enable FaceBreak from Settings > FaceBreak.
FaceBreak is a $1.99 tweak which can be installed from Cydia under BigBoss repo.
