iPod, iPad and iPhone iOS Firmware Downloads

By clicking Download, you will be redirected to an Apple Inc. server.
The list of available firmwares is automatically updated and always the most recent version. After downloading the desired firmware below, you can shift-click (PC) or option-click (Mac) the Restore or Update buttons in iTunes. A file dialog will open and let you choose the downloaded ipsw-file.

When you download the file with IE (Internet Explorer), it has a zip extension. You need to change that to .ipsw (ATTENTION: the right extension is IPSW not ispw !!). Don’t unzip it, just change the extension (rename the .zip file in .ipsw). If you don’t want to change the file type to .ipsw, just use different browser such Firefox or Safari from Apple. On a Mac if you read “xxxx.ipsw.zip” delete .zip !

      First, please speak clear English for us. It is very hard to follow a incoherent run on sentence. 
      Second, Do you know your iPhone is in DFU mode? Did you hold down the home and power for 10 seconds, released just the power button WHILE STILL HOLDING the home button, and then iTunes detected a device in DFU about 8 seconds later? 

      Personally I am an Android user, but one thing I really love about iPhones is that, unless you physically damage the phone, they are almost impossible to brick. I have never heard of a bricked iPhone that could not be restored to factory settings via DFU. So most likely, your iPhone is recoverable.

      You said you bought the phone from kijiji.com? What was the phone’s condition? Did it ever turn on normally? Get a flashlight and look inside the headphone jack. You should see a tiny paper strip. The strip should be 100% white. If it is orange, pink, or any other color other than white, then that means the phone has gotten wet, and you might indeed have a dead iPhone that needs major servicing. 

      1002 means a hardware issue with the iPhone prevented iTunes from restoring. I had this error before, and basically what I did was just kept putting my iDevice in DFU, restoring, and repeating until eventually it accepted it. Apparently this worked for many people who asked me about the same error message. For me it took about 8 tries, it might take more, it might take less. Just know that you are more than likely to be able to fix the phone yourself.

      I’m sorry, I can’t make out the last lines at all. Is that “Tried to jailbreak it with redsn0w ‘BY DOWNGRADING IT TO’ 4.2.1? Or is your firmware actually 4.2.1? Downgrading is a little complicated, and it involves adding IP addresses in the system files to trick iTunes into communicating with a server that tells it the firmware is legit. Its best to try to restore the iPhone to factory settings before jailbreaking it, so tell it to restore to the latest version of iOS, which should be 5.0.1 (which is still jailbreak-able). For now, do not use a firmware you downloaded from here or wherever you get firmware, just use the iOS iTunes provides for you. 

      Keep us posted on your problem.

      You just need to change the .ZIP extension to –> .IPSW

      e.g.
      If you have downloaded:
      “iPhone3,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.zip”
      rename it in:
      “iPhone3,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.ipsw”
      (Don’t unzip it. Just change the extension)

    Hi, I’ve been having SERIOUS problems getting redsnOw to recognize the ipsw file!! i’m trying to downgrade to 3.1.3 because my current firmware of 4.0 on my 3G is SOOOOO SLOOOOWWWW :-( before i downgrade via itunes, i need to be sure redsnow will jailbreak the firmware! I did downgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.0 to fix the battery issue, but now it lags sooo bad!! please someone help me!! my only issue seems to be not getting snowbreeze OR redsnow to recognize the ipsw file!! I’m using a PC.. any help would be soooo awesome!! thx

    Ok, just sayin’ but, you have iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS listed at 2ND Generation and iPhone 3GS is the 3RD generation iPhone, and you’ve got iPhone 4 listed as “3TH generation”…
    There’s no such thing as a “3th” and iPhone “4″ is the “4th” generation iPhone.

    Hey guys, many thanks for this website, it got everything for iphone fans. But just 1 thing, i own 3gS 16gb and was never jailbroke (because i thought thats the way to use the fone), until last week I’ve coincidently upgrade the firmware to 3.1.3 with 05.12.01 so now, is it still possible for me to jailbroke this iphone?     Hi,

    I have an iphone 3gs (32gb) – apparently it’s “unlocked” but someone screwed it up so bad that when I connect via USB to the PC (while itunes is on) instead of itunes recognizing it, the iphone says “USB config”. Restart (holding down both buttons) or DFU mode both don’t work.

    In such a situation how do I upgrade the firmware since it’s not restarting and itunes isn’t picking up the device.

    Please help!

    i haave a 3gs 16gb iphone which i was prepping for jailbreaking.when i selected clear data it wont reboot and i seem to have lost the firmware. it hasnt been jailbroken and unlocked yet and wason firmware 3.1.2 and theold baseband which is still there. how can i load 3.1.2 on it again, activate it and keep thecurrent baseband so it can be unlocked?its never had3.1.3 on it. any help would.be greatly appreciated

    2. Why I can’t get to the screen of “Retore” or “Update” on iTunes so that I can select the firmware file? Do I need to register to iTunes to see this screen? Also, do I need to insert the SIM card into my phone at all time?

    Your guides are easy to use and the links work perfect. You guys are the best. Also had the problem with the Firmware being downloaded as a .zip using Internet Explorer, if you don’t want to change the file type to .IPSW, just use different browser such Firefox or Safari from Apple. Good luck guys

    When you download the file with IE, it has a zip extension. You need to change that to .ipsw (ATTENTION: the right extension is IPSW not ispw!!). Don't unzip it. Just change the extension (rename the .zip file in .ipsw). On a mac if you read "xxxx.ipsw.zip" delete .zip !

    Need some help, guys. Need to go back to 3.0 from 3.1 so my apps. will work again. When I click on the proper .ipsw file, it begins the process but, after saying "verifying with Apple", it says my "device isn't eligible for the requested build". I know nothing about unlocking & jailbreaking (though both were already done by the seller for my Ebay-purchased phone). Am I just screwed since it's apparently checking with Apple before it will let me do the FW restore?
