Google Assistant For iOS Coming At I/O 2017 [Rumor]

Google Assistant is still to make its way across all of the Android devices capable of running it, but there is already work underway to bring the personal assistant software to Apple’s iOS platform.

According to a new report by Android Police, citing “a trusted source”, Google is set to announce Assistant for iOS soon.

While no concrete date has been provided for when the announcement will come, it stands to reason that it could well be when Google holds is annual developer conference this week. Google I/O has historically been a great place to announce new and updated products, and this would definitely fall into that category.

When it does arrive on iOS though, it is anticipated that it will only be available for those in the United States initially, arriving internationally in due course. This is the same release pattern Google has followed with Assistant on Android across non-Pixel phones, too.

Expectations are that the Assistant functionality will be its own standalone app rather than part of the existing “Google” app that is already available on the iOS App Store, and that interacting with it will take place via the same conversational interface that users of Android phones can already enjoy. This method of working with digital personal assistants makes plenty of sense, and we see little reason for Google to change such a fundamental part of Assistant just for its iOS debut.

With Google I/O 2017 taking place this week, we do not have too long to wait in order to find out whether we are right in our hunch that Assistant will arrive as part of an on-stage announcement, but if Android Police have their facts right then we should see it soon enough, even if Google I/O is not the venue for its big unveiling.
