We’re used to Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities commenting on and making predictions about Apple and its product range, but this time around the prominent and highly respected analyst is back with new reports focusing on Samsung and its hardware. This time around Kuo has released a pair of reports, focusing on Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and upcoming Galaxy Note 8.
Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 launch may have turned into something of a disaster, but that won’t prevent the company from continuing that highly successful device range, with the Galaxy Note 8 expected to be announced sooner rather than later.
As part of the note, Kuo has been talking about the Galaxy Note 8, suggesting that the introduction of a dual-camera system will be the “most important upgrade” with that particular device. That system is predicted to include 3x optical zoom with a single 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, as well as a 13-megapixel telephoto option. It’s also being suggested that the experience and capability of that camera will be much better than what Apple offers on last year’s iPhone 7 Plus.
Kuo has also provided additional information and insight on Samsung’s Galaxy S8 range. When Samsung initially introduced that device, Kuo was critical of the hardware, saying that it “lacked attractive selling points” compared to what Apple is expected to announce with iPhone 8.
However, the KGI analyst has slightly changed his stance on the device, explaining that initial reactions to the hardware appear to have been overwhelmingly positive, with most users loving the bezel-free design dominated by the display.
Samsung’s Galaxy S8 may not have a dual-camera, and it may have stuck the fingerprint reader on the rear, but it seems that the stunning full-size OLED display is a winner. As a result, KGI has also revised its S8 shipment predictions:
According to our survey, market feedback to Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ (abbreviated as ‘S8’) has been better than expected since their unveiling. We attribute this to a better- than-expected selling point in the full-screen design. For this reason, we revise up our 2017F S8 shipments from 40-45mn units to 50-55mn units.
In regards to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8, the company still believes that Tim Cook and co will launch a redesigned device encompassing a bezel-free OLED display.
