Ps VR Play Area Needs, Different Facts Officially Unveiled

Planning on picking up a PlayStation VR headset when it goes on sale on October 13th? Then you’re going to need to make sure that you have plenty of space set aside for it in your room.

According to a brochure that has cropped up on the PlayStation Asia website, users will require a large space be cleared before they can get their virtual reality on, with a box sized approximately 9.8 feet by 6.2 feet required.

Part of the reason for the limitations on the size of room, or at least the open space that the VR headset can be used in stems from the use of the PlayStation Camera.

A requirement of the PlayStation VR setup, the camera requires empty space around the player in order to track them. Gamers who have previously used PlayStation or Xbox-based movement controls will already likely be familiar with the requirement to move furniture and pets out of the way, but the idea of doing the same with a virtual reality headset such as Sony’s own PS VR may not have crossed everyone’s mind.

Interestingly, Sony seems keen to ensure gamers stay seated during their activities, suggesting that if the application specifically requests that they stand up, they should make sure they know where they are in relation to obstacles in the room.

Clear an area larger than the Play Area of all obstacles before using PS VR and remain seated whenever possible. If the application requires you to stand while wearing the VR headset, follow the application instructions carefully, and maintain awareness of your surroundings.

Sony’s PlayStation VR goes on sale October 13th and comes with a separate processor unit that measures about 5.6 x 1.5 x 5.6 inches. This unit will connect to the PlayStation 4 and handle any calculations required in order to make the headset work – so make sure you have room for it! The headset will project a resolution of 960×1080 at 120/90 Hz over each eye, and will have a field of view of 100 degrees.
