Rdio is known for its all-you-can-eat streaming radio service that lets you listen to any music track in their catalog. Now, the online music service is looking to take on Pandora and iTunes Radio with a new streaming radio station feature.
The streaming radio service actually debuted earlier this year, but it was only available to users who paid for a premium subscription. Rdio VP of product Chris Becherer said the company was motivated to offer this service to all of its listeners after it noticed that half of its subscribers were using another service to listen to radio. Rather than have them leave Rdio, these new channel-based content will keep customers in the Rdio ecosystem.
Rdio’s service is available to all members, but it is limited in its scope for free customers. Both free and paid customers will be able to listen to preset stations based on an artist, song, playlist or album. Paid users will be able to limit that channel to just one artist/band, while free users will have to listen to a mix of recommended, similar music.
Rdio’s new radio feature is included in the 2.5.0 version that is available now in the iOS App Store. The new smart radio feature is available to all listeners in the US, Canada and Australia.
