2019 iPhones To Get 12MP Front Cam Along With Hidden Ultra-Wide Lens

Apple will announce new iPhones this coming September, assuming previous release cadences are to be followed, and serial Apple watcher Ming-Chi Kuo has today shared news that Apple plans to improve the front facing cameras in its 2019 iPhones.

Current iPhones feature a 7-megapixel camera up front, with Kuo apparently of the belief that the new handsets will ship with a 12-megapixel camera.

He also said that the rumored triple camera system will be part of both the 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch iPhones with the third lens being a super-wide 12-megapixel affair.

While it’s good news that both high-end iPhones will receive the new camera setup around back, it sounds like assumptions that the cheaper iPhone XR replacement will not were accurate. At least, not in 2019.

In order to improve the capabilities of that new front camera, Kuo said that the unit will move from the current 4-element configuration to a new 5-element one. Importantly, the new front-facing shooter will not be exclusive to the high end iPhones, with the iPhone XR’s replacement also receiving it.

Back to that new, third camera around the back, Kuo says that it will be manufactured exclusively by Sony with a new black coating included to help make everything look nice. The theory is that with the black coating in place, the cameras will be almost invisible.

We’ll know more about this as we get closer to the unveiling in September, and we can’t wait to see what the new camera configuration makes possible. Apple’s cameras have faced stiff competition from many Android phone makers of late, and all eyes are on what the 2019 iPhones have up their sleeves.
