A New Apple TV Could Support 120Hz Refresh According To tvOS 14.5 Beta

Code found in the latest tvOS 14.5 beta suggests that a future Apple TV will ship with support for 120Hz displays.

Discovered by 9to5Mac, there are multiple mentions of 120Hz support across the update, suggesting that we could see the silky-smooth refresh rate supported in a future Apple TV.

The current Apple TV 4K doesn’t support the feature and never will due to its lack of a HDMI 2.1 port.

Multiple references to “120Hz” and “supports120Hz” have been added to tvOS’ PineBoard in the latest beta release. For those unfamiliar with the matter, PineBoard is the internal name of the system that controls the Apple TV interface, similar to the SpringBoard on iPhone and iPad. These references strongly suggest that Apple is at least internally testing a 120Hz mode for Apple TV.

Apple has long been rumored to have a new Apple TV in the works and a report from 2019 suggested that HDMI 2.1 was coming to a new device in the future. That rumor might finally be about to come true with a new Apple TV potentially ready to be announced during an unannounced event this month.

That same event would also see the arrival of a new iPad Pro, while new Apple silicon Macs are also on the horizon.
