Apple Already Has Revised Patent For Folding iPhone

Hot on the heels of the Samsung Galaxy Fold device that was announced recently, attention has predictably turned to whether Apple will follow suit. For now, we’re not so sure but a revised patent for a folding phone, of Apple origin, won’t stop people from getting their hopes up.

The design was filed in October of last year and proves that Apple was at least considering making its own foldable phone. That should come as no surprise considering Apple throws a lot of mud at the wall to see what sticks, and many projects are often in flight for a long time, never seeing the light of day. Further, Apple files patents for just about everything any of its engineers come up with, again with few of those ideas turning into real, selling products.

That being said, the patent describes a display that would fold in half or two thirds using hinges, saying that “it would be desirable to be able to use flexible display technology to provide improved electronic devices.”

This does, of course, tie in with a report fro last March by CNBC in which it was claimed that Apple would have a foldable iPhone ready by 2020, with the device turning into a small tablet at will. We’re not sure that’s going to happen within the timescale mentioned, or at all, but we’d be daft to suggest that eyes inside Apple will very much be on the Galaxy Fold, just like the rest of us.

If the Galaxy Fold is going to cost $2000, what would an iPhone of similar bending nature cost, and would you buy it?
