Apple Announces macOS 11 Big Sur Final Release Date

After months of betas – and some of them being pretty bad! – Apple today confirmed that it will make macOS Big Sur available to the public on November 12.

With Apple having already launched iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 alongside all the other annual software updates it was starting to look like macOS Big Sur would never be ready for prime time.

But with a new Release Candidate also being made available to developers following today’s “One more thing” special event, we now know that everyone else will only need to wait a couple more days before getting their hands on the new software.

Apple also has new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini devices shipping next week, all running the new Apple M1 chip and macOS Big Sur. Perhaps Apple has been waiting to get those out the door before making macOS Big Sur available to the masses.

The update itself brings with it support for Apple silicon, including the installation of iPhone and iPad apps on Macs. There are also new changes that include a reworked interface, a new Notification Center, and widgets similar to those on iPhone and iPad.

Apple has also improved many of its first-party apps including Messages – an app that has needed plenty of attention of late.

There’s no indication at what point on November 12 we can expect to see macOS Big Sur arrive, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled.
