Apple Joins 6G Industry Group Following Launch Of 5G iPhones

Apple just launched its first-ever 5G-capable iPhones and it’s already looking to the future. Part of that is the news that it has joined the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) and the Next G Alliance.

The aim of all of that is to “advance North American mobile technology leadership in 6G and beyond over the next decade, while building on the long-term evolution of 5G.”

Apple joins 11 other new companies all aiming to move to 6G at some point in the future. The other members of the alliance include Charter, Cisco, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Keysight Technologies, LG, Mavenir, MITRE, and VMware.

Designed to set the foundation for a vibrant marketplace for North American innovation in future generations of mobile technology, the Next G Alliance is named after its primary goal: to establish North American preeminence in the 5G evolutionary path and 6G development. Its work will encompass the full lifecycle of research and development, manufacturing, standardization and market readiness.

We might still be seeing 5G rolling out and it’s a matter for debate as to whether it’s going to fulfill many of its promises.

But the fact we’re already looking into 6G has us wondering when we might start seeing the next big thing. Even if the last big thing is still yet to actually be the big thing we were promised.
