Apple To Use Its Own Processors In Macs Instead Of Intel’s From 2020

It has been a rumor for as long as we can remember, but we now have the closest thing to confirmation yet – Apple is planning to ditch Intel as the CPU manufacturer for its Mac computers as of 2020, according to a new report coming out of Bloomberg.

The suggestion that Apple would like to move away from a reliance on Intel for its Mac-based computers has been floating around for a good long while now, and with the company building its own ARM-based CPUs for use in the iPhone and iPad, it does make plenty of sense that it would want to do the same with the Mac.

While it was always in the cards that this would happen, what we did not know however was when. Now, according to Bloomberg, Apple will have its own CPUs inside Macs from 2020 onwards as part of a new initiative labelled Kalamata.

If the name rings a bell, that’s because according to Google, Kalamata is “the second most populous city of the Peloponnese peninsula, after Patras, in southern Greece and the largest city of the homonymous administrative region.” So, now you know.

As the report goes, Apple executives have approved the project that will see iPhone, iPad, and Mac hardware become more closely related and while it is “still in the early developmental stages,” this project is likely to be one of the biggest Apple has undertaken since the Mac made the jump from IBM’s PowerPC architecture to that of Intel back in 2005 and 2006.

This story continues to develop and few details beyond the project’s name and its existence are available at this time. We’ll share more when we hear it.
