Apple Unveils Smart Speaker ‘HomePod’ for $350 in White and Space Gray, Coming December

Apple today announced its plans to “reinvent home music” with the unveiling of its newest product, the “HomePod.” The HomePod is 7-inches tall and is powered by Apple’s A8 chip.

The company said that the speaker is a combination of high quality music playback speakers and smart speaker systems that are on the market today. The HomePod can intelligently detect the space it is in with “spatial awareness,” which the company said provides better quality audio playback than its competitors.

As expected, HomePod automatically syncs with your Apple Music subscription and can playback playlists, radio stations, and more content found within Apple Music. Siri commands will let users ask the HomePod to play music, add songs to playlists, and even ask music trivia questions. Apple said users can be across the room, even while music is playing, and Siri will understand their inquiries.

In terms of other Apple apps, Siri will also include support for News, Messages, Podcasts, Stocks, Weather, Sports, Reminders, Alarms & Timers, and Traffic. HomePod will act as a HomeKit hub and let users control lights, blinds, locks, and other accessories by talking to the speaker.

The HomePod will launch in December for $349 in White and Space Gray in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.
