Apple Watch Series 4 To Get ECG Feature With watchOS 5.1.2

When Apple announced that the Apple Watch Series 4 would support ECG, or electrocardiogram, we knew that the feature would not launch alongside the watch itself, but we didn’t know when we would be able to take advantage of it beyond “this year.” Now we may have new information to suggest that it will arrive with the public release of watchOS 5.1.2.

This comes after MacRumors got its hands on internal Apple documents that claim watchOS 5.1.2 will enable the new ECG feature after it has completed its beta process and is made available to the public. This will make the Apple Watch Series 4 the first readily available device that is ECG-capable after the FDA cleared it for sale ahead of Apple’s Apple Watch announcement earlier this year.

Anyone with an Apple Watch, living in the United States and with a fully updated Apple Watch Series 4 will be able to hold their finger on the device’s Digital Crown and have an ECG taken over the course of thirty seconds. However, if the documentation MacRumors has is correct, Apple Store employees are being told to remind customers that the Apple Watch is not intended to replace more complex diagnostic devices.

Apple Store employees are instructed to advise customers that the ECG app is “not intended to be a diagnostic device or to replace traditional methods of diagnosis,” and “should not be used to monitor or track disease state or change medication without first talking to a doctor,” according to Apple’s document.

The last thing Apple wants is for someone to take legal action after an Apple Watch gave them OK shortly before a heart attack.
