Apple’s Photo Print Products Service To End Operation In September

Apple is killing off its Photo Print Products service, a service that has been part of iPhoto and subsequently Photos since the app first launched all the way back in 2002.

After initially offering users the ability to simply print their photos the service was expanded to include photo books, calendars and more and although it was never available as part of the iOS Photos app, it was a service that was much loved by its users. Its demise will be a disappointment to many.

Apple confirmed that the service will be killed off later this year with a new message popping up in macOS 10.13.6 via the Photos app with the company also confirming that it will only accept orders up to and including September 30th 2018.

Presumably the service will simply cease to exist at this point. Interestingly, Apple’s Photos app is already without the Photo Print Products service in the current macOS Mojave beta which confirms that it will likely never be available via the new version of the Mac operating system when it ships this September.

With the loss of this much loved service Apple is suggesting that users download a third-party app that uses the Photos Project Extension. This API was added as part of macOS High Sierra and allows apps to add photo printing to the Photos app themselves. The photo printing and indeed payment is all handled by that third-party with Apple having no finger in that particular pie. Such apps include WhiteWall and Shutterfly, and it’s good to know that options are at least available.

Whether they can live up to the amazing print quality that Apple has historically offered remains to be seen, but fingers crossed that in the long run nobody will miss this feature too much.
