Arlo suffers widespread outage preventing users from accessing cloud-based security cameras

Netgear’s Arlo security camera service suffered a widespread outage this weekend, perhaps the last thing you want when you rely on something for home security. The outage appears to have started late Saturday afternoon, with varying degrees of user-facing problems…

Arlo acknowledged the outage on its support forums, saying that the issues were caused by “intermittent login errors.” As a byproduct of those errors, however, many Arlo users were unable to access motion detection recordings or watch live streams.

As Engadget notes, this isn’t the first time Arlo has suffered an outage in recent months, but data from Downdetector indicates this one was far more widespread than others.

In its support forum posting, Arlo apologizes for the outage says the issues were not due to do “suspicious activity” as some had initially suggested.

We’re sorry if you were impacted by this service interruption and we want you to know that our team continues to closely monitor our systems to ensure that they function as expected. Rest assured that all of your cloud recordings are safe in your Library and you will continue to get alerts for new activity recorded by the camera system.

As we have seen online comments speculating that this interruption was due to suspicious activity, we also want to share that we have no reason to believe that this is the case.

Back in May, Netgear warned Arlo users of a potential security threat after attackers used credentials obtained from a third-party to access Arlo accounts. Perhaps somewhat ironically, Arlo’s widespread cloud outage this weekend comes just two months after it rolled out cloud-based subscriptions with additional features for Arlo cameras.

Netgear’s Arlo brand makes a series of connected security systems. Most notably, the company is behind the Arlo Baby Monitor, the first baby monitor to offer HomeKit support. Last month, the company expanded its home security lineup with a new smart wireless Audio Doorbell.
