Director Rian Johnson Says That Apple Doesn’t Want Bad Guys Using iPhone On-Screen

Director Rian Johnson has been speaking about one of his most popular movies, Knives Out, while going through one of its scenes in detail for Vanity Fair.

During the video he also mentioned something that might be a surprise to some. Although it might not, with Apple reportedly not keen on the idea of bad guys in movies using its iPhone.

Johnson was discussing a scene in which the props department made sure that the time shown on an iPhone would be the correct time in the movie. That caused Johnson to go on a slight tangent about iPhones, and Apple’s fondness of making sure that its halo product is seen as something only the good guys would use.

Also another funny thing, I don’t know if I should say this or not – not cause it’s like lascivious or something, but because it’s going to screw me on the next mystery movie that I write. But forget it, I’ll say it. It’s very interesting.

Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies but, and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie, bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.

While Johnson appeared reluctant to tell the tale at first, it isn’t something that will surprise some people. While Apple’s products have appeared in movies and TV shows for many years, they do tend to only appear in the hands of those who are seen to be on the right sight of the law. It makes sense, too, with Apple having spent years trying to cultivate a positive image.

You wouldn’t want that destroyed by a poorly placed iPhone in the hands of a Bond villain, would you?
