German Court Dismisses Four Qualcomm Patent Claims Against Apple, With Four More Being Reviewed

Qualcomm has lost a battle in its patent claims against Apple, with a German court rejecting four of its patents.

A decision will be taken later on a further four patents.

As the Wall Street Journal reports, the German court doesn’t believe that Apple infringed upon Qualcomm’s patents related to search capabilities within the iPhone.

A German court dismissed four patent lawsuits from Qualcomm Inc. against Apple Inc., the second victory this month for the tech giant in a continued global legal battle with the chip maker.

The regional court in the city of Munich Thursday rejected Qualcomm’s claims that Apple had infringed on its patents related to some search capabilities on the iPhone. The court has hasn’t yet reached a decision on four further search-related patent disputes.

Don Rosenberg, executive vice president and general counsel for Qualcomm, said the company disagrees with the court’s ruling on Thursday. Apple said in a statement, “We thank the court for their time and diligence in this case.”

The current claims relate to software that runs on the iPhone, and are separate from the hardware-related ones that have been causing the biggest fuss in recent weeks. It’s believed that Qualcomm is using these software patents as a way to try and put Apple under pressure, with the iPhone maker already in hot water in China. Some iPhones are essentially banned in China over claims that Apple’s image resizing and touch-based navigation infringes upon Qualcomm’s patents.

All of this detracts from what is surely the biggest issue between both Apple and Qualcomm. In the United States, the FTC is currently tackling Qualcomm over an antitrust case. While the FTC believes that its evidence is “overwhelming,” Qualcomm believes quite the opposite. We’ll have to see how that one pans out, after closing arguments were recently made.
