Hardware Issue In 13-Inch MacBook Pro Without Touch Bar Revealed By Internal Apple Memo

Apple is not having a great time of it when it comes to MacBook Pro hardware reliability right now and that looks set to continue after the company identified a limited hardware issue that is affecting the latest 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro models with function keys (without Touch Bar).

The news comes via an internal memo that was distributed to Apple Stores as well as Apple Authorized Service Providers throughout the last week.

Specifically, the memo notes that the MacBook Pro’s logic board or solid state drive may fail, with both pieces of hardware needing to be replaced at the same time under warranty. The memo doesn’t go into details as to why this is happening, especially why both parts appear to need replacing simultaneously, nor does it say what percentage of machines are expected to be impacted by this newfound issue.

MacRumors was able to get its hands on the memo from what it describes as a reliable source, and it is grim reading for anyone already concerned about Apple’s current notebook lineup.

Apple has identified a specific population of MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports) units requiring both solid state drives and the main logic board to be replaced when either has a functional failure.

A message will appear when either the solid state drive or the main logic board part number is added to the repair of an identified MacBook Pro system. The message will indicate both the SSD and MLB must be replaced when either component has a functional failure.

Apple is quoting a turnaround time of between five and seven days for the work, which will be covered as a free repair inside Apple’s limited one-year warranty or via an extended AppleCare+ plan.

Anyone with a device that they believe is suffering from such issues should make an appointment to visit their local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
