Huawei Responds After Its Android License Is Revoked

Chinese phone maker Huawei is in the middle of quite the crisis following the news that Google revoked its Android license this weekend, and now the company has shared its response to the situation. In a statement that was sent to The Verge, the company took pains to point out its contribution to Android as a whole.

Huawei was keen to point out that while other smartphone makers were seeing shrinking, or at least stale sales numbers, it was able to grow its Android business considerably. It also made sure Huawei and Honor owners knew that they would continue to receive support for their existing devices, despite the recent events.

Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry.

Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.

We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.

Reuters reports that the company has been granted a temporary license so that it may continue to serve Android updates to existing devices till August of this year.

With existing phone owners now safe in the knowledge that their phones will continue to have access to the Play Store following a Google announcement, it’s now on Huawei to find a solution for future phone sales around the globe. It’s said to be working on a replacement for Google’s Android services already, although it’s not clear how far into development that work has progressed.
