iOS 13 DualShock 4 Support + Sony’s Remote Play App Turns iPhone And iPad Into A Portable PlayStation 4

Support for DualShock 4 controllers within iOS 13 and iPadOS is undeniably a huge step forward for passionate mobile gamers but it probably means more than most think.

This support, in conjunction with Sony’s recently released Remote Play app, essentially makes iOS 13/iPadOS devices into portable PS4s.

During the opening keynote of WWDC 2019 earlier this week, Apple made a song-and-dance about a number of new features which are making it into iOS 13 and iPadOS. One of those announcements centered around newly introduced support for third-party gaming controllers, which means that iOS 13 and iPadOS will support Sony’s DualShock 4 controller from PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One Wireless controller.

If we consider the former in conjunction with Sony’s Remote Play app, it means that device owners can interact with PS4 games on their iOS 13/iPadOS via a connected DualShock 4 controller connected via Bluetooth. The new compatibility essentially turns an iPhone or iPad into a portable PlayStation 4 console.

Sony’s Remote Play app was launched to a relatively large fanfare from gamers who loved the idea of this freedom and versatility. It meant that PlayStation 4 games could be streamed from a PS4 console to the Remote Play app as long as the iOS device was connected to a Wi-Fi network. The general consensus is that this app works extremely well but had a terrible mechanism of control thanks to the on-screen virtual control system. Now, thanks to DualShock 4 support within iOS 13 and iPadOS, those controls are no longer needed, allowing the games to be controlled via a connected controller that offers familiarity as well as power and versatility.

Not all games are compatible with Sony’s Remote Play app so it definitely does have some limitations. With that said, it also comes with support for the PS4’s dashboard, the PS4 Store, user profiles, and even access to the device’s microphone that enables social activities such as chatting with friends and the ability to communicate via voice within games that are streaming via Remote Play.

This is definitely one of those features that have resonated instantly and on a powerful level with PlayStation 4 owners. Microsoft is also working on a streaming app of its own which, if it comes to iOS, would put PS4 and Xbox One owners in the same situation upon the release of iOS 13/iPadOS.
