iPhone 11 To Feature New Rose / R1 Coprocessor With Several More Sensors

Apple’s iPhone 11 will feature a new coprocessor that will allow for improved location awareness, according to a new report by MacRumors. Citing evidence found inside an internal build of iOS 13, the report says that the microprocessor is codenamed Rose and R1 currently.

It isn’t clear whether either name will be shared with the public during September 10th’s event, but it appears to be a beefed up version of the M-series motion coprocessor that has been used in iPhones in recent years. That particular coprocessor allows the iPhone to be aware of its location in 3D space using sensors like a compass, gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer, and microphones. This new coprocessor takes things to the next level.

According to the report, we can expect R1/Rose to also feature a ton more sensors.

The Rose coprocessor will add support for an inertial measurement unit (IMU), Bluetooth 5.1 features, ultra-wideband (UWB) and camera (including motion capture and optical tracking) sensor data to not only tell where the device is but also fuse this sensor data together to find lost Apple Tags and aid in the processing of People Occlusion from ARKit. Given the overlap in sensor data collection and processing the Rose coprocessor may replace the M-series motion coprocessor.

The added ability for more accurate location awareness could come in useful for use with the Tile-like tags that Apple is expected to announce during the iPhone 11 event. We’ll know more shortly – the event is now less than 24 hours away.
