Kodi Team Shares Version 18 Leia Development Cycle Story, Features And Other Details

You may think nothing about turning on your Android box, PC, Mac, or mobile device and firing up Kodi to watch something from your local library or to stream something over the Internet, but do you ever stop and wonder how a platform like Kodi gets to where it is today?

A handy and insightful little article published by the Kodi team has provided us with a rare insight into some of the statistics which have taken us to the verge of a Kodi 18 Leia release.

The first part of the article talks about how the team has developed and maintained a stable architecture for a huge platform like Kodi to be actually built upon. To the average user, Kodi is a set of graphics and functions which affords them with the ability to view their media or stream content through additional add-ons. However, from a pure software development perspective, developing and maintaining Kodi is a monumental technical task and takes the skills of many developers from all over the world. And, speaking of those developers, some of the published statistics show just how much work they have done.

The published information shows that there have been a whopping 5900 code chunks changed during the development of Kodi 18, as well as more than 1800 pull-requests and 7580 changed files in the Kodi platform. As part of continually refactoring the project and trying to make it as streamlined as possible, the team have added 397,000 lines of code but removed another 350,000, which has included assistance from over 35 open-source developers.

That’s a whole heap of work put in by a large community of developers in their free time in order to pull together what should be an amazing experience with Kodi 18, codenamed Leia.

As part of the move from Krypton to Leia, the team has managed to place a large amount of focus on stability. It’s generally the same with any platform of this size whereby the new features and additions reach a critical mass and the team needs to slow down and focus on actually stabilizing the monster it has created.

The post finishes by confirming that there is no set timescale or release date for Kodi 18, but remember, there are new test builds for various different platforms available almost every day as progress continues.
