Kuo: Apple Likely To Use Scissor Switch Keyboard For 2019 MacBook Air, 2020 MacBook Pro

Apple has drawn plenty of criticism for its MacBook keyboards ever since they arrived in 2015. Numerous iterations of the butterfly mechanism used in the keyboards hasn’t prevented them failing at a remarkable rate, but that may soon come to an end.

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple is rolling a new type of keyboard out that will be part of a refreshed MacBook Air this year.

The MacBook Pro will also see the new keyboard, but not until next year.

In order to make the keyboards more resilient Kuo says that Apple is returning to scissor keys, something it previously used and continues to use on its Magic Keyboard product. Kuo also says that the current butterfly keyboards are costly to produce which is another reason Apple may want to ditch it.

Since 2015 users have noticed that their MacBooks have exhibited issues where keys refuse to work or register double presses by mistake. The issue appears to be when debris gets inside the key itself, with the only fix often being a complete replacement of the keyboard. That takes time, and some people refuse to buy a new MacBook until this issue is fixed.

While it’s disappointing that the MacBook Pro won’t see a refresh with the new keyboard until next year, the fact it’s happening at all is a relief. With the rumors of a 16-inch MacBook Pro also in the works, we can only imagine that too will see the new scissor keys.
