Kuo: Strong MacBook Pro Shipments Will Drive Market Adoption Of mini-LED Tech

Apple’s upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks will drive strong demand and shipment growth, according to note by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, as seen by MacRumors.

What’s more, that will have a knock-on effect that will see the entire mini-LED industry move closer toward adopting the technology across the board.

The current 12.9-inch iPad Pro is the only device Apple sells with a mini-LED screen employed, but that’s set to change when the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks ship this year.

Kuo believes that a strong showing from those two machines will see a larger investment in mini-LED technology, likely meaning more manufacturers come online.

We believe that MacBooks, not iPads, mainly drive Mini LED panel shipments. MacBook shipments have not grown much in the past few years. However, we expect MacBook shipments to grow significantly by 20% YoY, or more in 2021 and 2022, due to the adoption of Mini LED panels, Apple Silicon, and all-new designs.

The new machines are expected to feature new M1X processors with up to 64GB of RAM. The return of an HDMI port, as well as SD card slots, is also said to be in the cards, while MagSafe may also make a return to the Mac lineup. A recent Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman has the new machines shipping before November rolls around.
