Latest iOS 13.4 Beta Hints At New Over-The-Air Recovery Option For iPhones And iPads

Apple seeded the latest beta of iOS 13.4 to developers recently, with the update likely to arrive on iPhones and iPads for everyone else in the coming weeks. And with previous betas having already hinted at CarKey functionality, 9to5Mac has found that the latest version might have another surprise in store.

The update that was made available to developers includes the frameworks for a new feature that appears to be called OS Recovery.

Based on that name it doesn’t take a huge leap of faith to work out what it will do. And 9to5Mac is of the belief that the recovery will be done without connecting the device to a computer. Even better, it could possibly also be done by connecting to another iPhone or iPad, instead.

According to what we found in the system, it would be possible to restore the iOS directly over-the-air as well as by connecting the device via USB to another iPhone or iPad, similar to how Apple’s Migration Tool works.

Anyone needing to restore an iPhone or iPad right now would need to connect it to a Mac or PC using a Lightning cable.

The process then involves either Finder or iTunes and isn’t the best process ever devised. Being able to do it without a computer could be a big deal for those whose phones act out while away from home, or just someone who doesn’t have a computer at all.

Apple has made the iPhone more independent in the years since 2007. And this move would be the latest example of that. Now to hope that it doesn’t get ripped out before iOS 13.4 goes live.
