Microsoft Now Has 1 Billion Active Devices Running Windows 10

It’s taken a couple of years longer than it hoped, but Microsoft has now been able to claim that it has Windows 10 installed on a cool one billion devices.

According to the company that number includes all kinds of devices, including PCs, Xbox consoles, and even HoloLens. But the important thing is the one billion, and it sure is a huge number.

Microsoft is revealing today that 1 billion active machines are now running Windows 10.

“Today we’re delighted to announce that over one billion people have chosen Windows 10 across 200 countries resulting in more than one billion active Windows 10 devices,” Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s corporate VP of Modern Life and the Search & Devices Group said. “We couldn’t be more grateful to our customers, partners, and employees for helping us get here.”

Microsoft had originally expected to be able to reach this goal a couple of years ago, but it didn’t come to be. Microsoft also recently finally killed off Windows 7 support, although there are ongoing relationships for those running the machines in a business setting.

Amazingly, and perhaps indicative of some of the problems it faces, Windows is now running on more than 80,000 different combinations of notebooks and 2-in-1 devices. Those machines are from more than 1,000 different manufacturers, too. And we thought that Android had some sort of fragmentation problem!
