Report Claims 5G iPhone With In-Display Touch ID Is Still Coming This Year

At this point it’s become pretty well acknowledged that we won’t see Touch ID on any of this year’s flagship devices, but a new report by Economic Daily News claims that isn’t the case at all. If it’s right we might see a whole new security feature this year.

According to the report, touch display manufacturer GIS, as well as Qualcomm, and OLED-display-maker BOE are all working together in order to bring an iPhone to market that uses an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

Similar technology has been offered in some Android devices for a while now and, by all accounts, it’s pretty great. By adding Touch ID inside the display Apple would be able to bring it back without also adding a Home button like the iPhone SE.

Previous rumors surrounding the use of an in-display Touch ID technology have suggested that it will arrive next year, with 2020 simply being too soon for it to make an appearance.

Whether that’s something that might have been different had the coronvirus pandemic not taking hold, we might never know.

It’s thought that if and when Touch ID just return it will be as an addition to Face ID, rather than a replacement. If Apple did ditch Face ID it would allow for the removal of the infamous notch, but it isn’t that that Apple is going that route.
