Safari On macOS 11 Big Sur Now Supports 4K HDR YouTube

Apple will launch macOS 11 Big Sur later this year, likely in or around September. The update already has plenty going on with a pretty big visual redesign coming to the Mac. But all of that pales into insignificance when you consider one important piece of news – the update will include new Safari support for 4K HDR video on YouTube.

Historically, anyone using a Mac who wanted to get the very best out of YouTube would need to download Chrome to do it. But once macOS 11 Big Sur lands, that won’t be a thing anymore.

Safari currently doesn’t support the VP9 codec that YouTube uses to deliver its very best quality images, but it seems that Apple has decided to fix that after many years of simply refusing to do so.

In our testing, YouTube now performs exactly the same way in Safari as it always has in Chrome. Content looks great, too.

Apple has also made a similar move in iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and tvOS 14 and it’s great to see the same feature come to the Mac, too.

All of these updates are currently available to those who are registered developers and in our testing, all of them have been pretty great so far. For everyone else, fingers crossed that nothing goes too far south by the time September rolls around!
