Samsung Acknowledges Galaxy Note 8 Dead Battery Issue

Samsung does not have the best of histories when it comes to batteries built into its high-end smartphones, as anyone with a memory of last year’s Galaxy Note 7 debacle will remember.

Recently, we started to hear claims that the phone’s replacement, the Galaxy Note 8, is also starting to experience battery related issues although, thankfully, they do not appear to be combusting but rather simply refusing to work.

Starting last week, we began to hear about a number of users who claimed that after fully discharging their Galaxy Note 8, plugging it into a charger did nothing. Using a different charger did not yield any better results, with the smartphone simply refusing to power on or even start charging. We also heard limited reports of similar things happening with the Galaxy S8+.

It’s not clear whether this is a software or hardware issue at this point, though Samsung did apparently tell impacted users to simply return their handset for a warranty replacement. Now, Samsung has officially acknowledged the issue via a German press release. This translation is via machine, so bear that in mind.

Samsung is taking all reports of this kind seriously, we only received a very small number of customer inquiries that could be linked to charge management, and unfortunately we can only comment on the matter further.

Even allowing for the poor translation, that statement is definitely a bit vague for our liking. It’s still early days for this issue though, and until we have more reports and more information about exactly what is going on, we would warn against anyone making this into a bigger issue than it needs to be. That, of course, is easy to say until your smartphone refuses to charge. Let’s just hope this does not start to snowball into a larger issue.
