Tesla Has Launched A Retrofit Program For Cameras On Older Cars With Full Self-Driving

Tesla has launched a new retrofit program for the cameras installed on older cars that were sold with the promise of Full Self-Driving compatibility.

Since 2016 Tesla has been selling cars with the promise of them being capable of full self-driving capabilities via a future software update. That turned out to be false, however, with new cameras required to make that happen.

The hardware has actually gone through various revisions, and now Tesla is ready to upgrade the cameras on Autopulit 2.0 cars so that they can indeed take advantage of the FSD tech.

Tesla’s new program launched via an in-app message for those who own cars that are eligible for the program, according to an Electrek report

“As an owner with Full Self-Driving Capability and early production cameras (your VIN), you are eligible for complimentary Autopilot Camera Upgrade, Camera replacements are required to access a continuously expanding suite of Full Self-Driving Capability features.

To arrange your complimentary camera replacements, schedule a new appointment from the Service menu in your Tesla App, Select ‘Schedule Service’ > ‘Upgrades & Accessories’ > ‘Autopilot Camera’.”

While nobody knows for sure just how many cars will now be set for new camera installations, Electrek does report that the company’s service centers are now expected to suffer from additional strain over the next few weeks as a result of the retrofit scheme.
