The iPhone 12 Might Not Have The Super-Fast 2×2 MIMO Uplink For 5G Data

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is one who seems to have a knack of gleaning information from Apply’s supply chain and then using that information to work out what Apple is planning next.

He told us last year that the 2020 5G iPhone 12 would feature a 2×2 MIMO radio technology for super-fast data uploads. But now he says that isn’t the case at all.

Last June he mentioned that Apple’s move to 5G with the iPhone 12 would greatly benefit WIN SEMI and Broadcom, because devices would use six power amplifiers in order to offer the very best 5G speeds. But Kuo has now backtracked, saying that the iPhone 12 will now only feature one or two amplifiers. As a result, 2×2 MIMO uplink simply won’t be possible.

In real world use, most people won’t notice the difference, however. The rollout of 5G networks is still very much a work in progress. And even if someone does live in a 5G-equipped area, it’s unlikely they will notice whether they can upload more quickly or not.

Still, this backtracking by Kuo is interesting. Was he right initially and something has changed? Or was his information from June duff all along?

Ming-Chi Kuo is someone who has long been one of the more reliable analysts, so it would be interesting to know exactly what happened here.
