TSMC Will Reportedly Start Production Of iPhone 12’s A14 Chip In April

Apple is widely expected to announce the iPhone 12 in September of this year, although coronavirus might still cause problems in that regard.

But chip supplier TSMC is reportedly getting all of its ducks in a row and assuming it’s business as usual by starting production of the A14 processor as soon as next month.

The Apple-designed A14 processor is expected to beat at the heart of the iPhone 12, following on from the Apple A13 that is used in the current crop of iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro handsets. It’ll no doubt be super fast, thanks in part to the move to a 5nm process.

TSMC is set to kick off volume production of chips built using 5nm process technology in April, and has already seen the process capacity fully booked by clients, according to industry sources.

By moving to a 5nm process Apple’s chip should run cooler and without using as much power. That should allow it to run faster and improve battery life – two things that iPhone owners will be very pleased about.

Apple will likely announce the iPhone 12 in September ahead of a launch in the same week. The iPhone 9 is likely to arrive in the coming weeks or months, although coronavirus appears to have put paid to a media event taking place this month.

That same event was expected to play host to the iPhone 9 alongside Apple’s rumored AirTags. It remains to be seen when the latter will make its big arrival.
