You Can Now Upload Photos From Instagram Mobile Site, Even On iPad

Instagram has updated its mobile website, giving users who do not have access to the social network’s mobile app the ability to upload or post photos, even on iPad.

Until today, the only way to post images to Instagram was to download one of the company’s mobile apps, and whether you are in a country where the app is not available or simply cannot download it due to data restrictions or poor bandwidth, the newly updated mobile website now provides the ability to upload photos of your breakfast regardless.

Following the update, anyone who visits instagram.com on a mobile device will be able to upload images. This includes the iPhone, as you might expect, but also the iPad. This means that users of Apple’s tablets can (officially) upload images to Instagram for the first time – Instagram inexplicably still does not have an official iPad app available for download.

As a result, getting images off of an iPad and into Instagram has historically been a bit of a farce. Anyone who really wanted to get photos from an iPad and into their Instagram account had to resort to using the network’s iPhone app on their tablet, something that really should have stopped being a necessity not long after the original iPad arrived in 2010. Thankfully, that is no longer the case.

As is perhaps to be expected, Instagram’s mobile website does not include certain features, particularly the data-intensive Stories and less-often-used options such as the ability to send messages within the app. If Instagram’s decision to give the mobile website the ability to upload images is indeed to help those with poor data connections, the decision to nix things like Stories does make plenty of sense, but for those using iPads at home it would have been nice to at least have the option.

In fact, scratch that. An Instagram iPad app would be nice.
